York Ebor Day 4 Tips: 22/1 shot can be Ebor King on Saturday

It’s been a fantastic few days at York for the Ebor Festival, which concludes on Saturday after another seven-race card featuring the lucrative Ebor Handicap.

My York Ebor Day 4 tips includes a 22/1 each-way shout for the big one.

13:50 – Enfjaar @ 4/1

Shadwell Stud’s retained rider Jim Crowley has opted for Alyanaabi over ENFJAAR in the opener – a decision I suspect will backfire.

Since being gelded late last year, the latter has done nothing but improve. He made easy work of a Chelmsford handicap on his reappearance in June before a classy victory off a mark of 99 in the John Smith’s Cup here on the Knavesmire the following month.

Up a further six pounds, he then went to Glorious Goodwood and was narrowly denied in the Chesterfield Cup having been asked to do too much, too late. He was very strong at the finish and I’d argue he’s unlucky not to be 3-3 this term.

I think he’s more than ready for the step up to Group company. The RPR (Racing Post Rating) of 117 he recorded last time out is higher than anything his eight rivals have achieved and the Lope De Vega colt has only had eight runs to date, so there’s likely even more to come.

The three-year-old filly See The Fire, who receives plenty of weight, is a big danger, but I’m rather sweet on the selection for Roger Varian, who’s operating at a 24 per cent strike rate in the last two weeks.

15:35 – Sea King e/w @ 22/1

The big race of the week is of course the Ebor – a 22-runner handicap over 1m6f with a cool £300k awarded to the winner.

Who will that be? My idea is SEA KING here for Sir Mark Prescott.

The five-year-old Sea The Stars gelding is in the form of his life, rising from a mark of 93 to 99 for winning two of four starts since April, but he still gives the impression that more is under the bonnet which makes him a very interesting proposition.

Perhaps he will forever flatter to deceive, for he’s an extremely strong traveller that doesn’t always find much off the bridle, but I’m willing to chance it’s just a bit of luck he needs.

With a bit of luck, I fancy he’ll be one of the last off the bridle and if he can find the right gaps at the right time, he might just show what he’s been promising to do for a while now.

16:45 – Mr Lightside @ 9/4

My eager eyes are drawn to MR LIGHTSIDE in this Listed juvenile race over five furlongs.

Michael Appleby’s Earthlight colt was extremely disappointing on his debut over six at Leicester earlier this summer, finishing 15½ lengths off the pace in 11th, but he improved leaps and bounds to win a Redcar novice when dropped to the minimum trip next time out.

Connections then sent him to Nottingham and he downed subsequent winner Hallasan, now rated 85, by a couple of lengths with Diligently, who landed the lucrative Premier Yearling Stakes on Thursday, a further length behind.

The selection improved again when third in the G3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, finishing within a length of Big Mojo who ran very well in the Gimcrack here on Friday and the 103-rated Aesterius – and a length in front of Lowther heroine Celandine.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s the strongest form on offer in this 17-strong field and he rates a strong suggestion.
