James Wade highest checkout over 120.5 @ 21/20
Wade surprised a few with his convincing 16-10 win over Ross Smith in the quarters, the only thing that really surprised me was the 13 180s he hit. A 100 average, solid doubles at 42 percent and three ton-plus checkouts helped him along the way. Tonight will be a different kettle of fish against the best player in the world right now, in my opinion.
Humphries made light work of Dimitri in the end last round, reeling off the last five legs to win 16-10. It was yet another ton plus average for Cool Hand which has become standard for him. He’s averaged 109, 102 and 101 in his matches so far this week, so it’s more of a surprise if he averages under a ton at this stage.
For me, he’ll just have too much scoring power for Wade – he has a strong record against The Machine and I expect him to keep this trend going. Since September 2021, Humphries has won eight of their nine meetings, with the most recent meeting being in March this year, where Cool Hand a 6-1 winner that day.
If Wade repeats his quarter-final performance then he should he able to at least compete with Humphries, but he needs Humphries to have an off night to have a chance of winning I’d say.
Over 5.5 Wade 180s was tempting after his maximum hitting against Smith, but I’m opting for the more reliable selection of Wade to hit a 121+ checkout, which he successfully managed for us in his quarter-final with an exact 121 checkout. He’s now hit a 121+ checkout in four of his last five matches.
In terms of longer format matches (first to 10+ legs or first to three sets) he’s managed a 121+ checkout in 12 of his last 15 matches in this format over the past 12 months. In first to 16+ legs matches over the same period, he’s achieved a 121+ checkout in all three of them – one of them being against Humphries.
The stats weigh massively in favour of him popping in this range of checkout so cracking value at 21/20.
Michael Van Gerwen highest checkout over 130.5 @ 20/21
I’m really finding this one tough to predict.
The head-to-head stats and even the more recent ones stack heavily in MVG’s favour, having won five of their six meetings in 2024. Smith’s win over MVG in the 2023 World Championship final was a bit of an outlier, but MVG has generally enjoyed the vast majority of their matchups.
I still find Van Gerwen very unpredictable and Smith has been tough to get right over the past 18 months so I’ve no interest in the win markets etc, the bookmakers are finding it tough to call too as they have priced it up pretty equally.
MVG still averaged 97 despite hitting less than 30 percent of his doubles, missing 38 doubles in total, which emphasises how good his scoring was against Gilding. Smith almost had a free pass in his quarter-final due to Cross’ inability to hit a double for the majority of the match. Smith started well but lost his way a bit late on, however he still averaged 96.
The 180s market also look tricky to call. Smith is renowned as a more prolific 180 hitter, but MVG is averaging 0.29 180s per leg compared to Smith’s 0.28 per leg over the last 12 months, which may surprise a few.
So, I’m going to focus on a player nailing a big checkout – this time I’m going for MVG to hit a checkout over 130.5 at near even money.
He’s managed to hit a 131+ checkout in all three of his matches this week so far, and with this being an longer format, it’ll likely be the most legs he’ll have played in a match this week by a distance, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to nail a big one. I think evens is a good bet here for this outcome.
We’ve managed to get this double boosted from 3/1 to 7/2!
