World Matchplay Darts 2023: Price looking to go one better in Blackpool

World Matchplay Darts 2023: Price looking to go one better in Blackpool

The prestigious and much loved Betfred World Matchplay Darts tournament begins on Saturday 15th July and as official title sponsor, we will have more coverage than ever. Ahead of the event, we interviewed one of the betting favourites, Gerwyn Price.

‘The Iceman’ feels in a good mental place ahead of the second most prestigious tournament on the darting calendar, after an up and down year that saw him depart the World Championships in ludicrous circumstances.

The Welshman resorted to wearing ear-defenders, to try to block out the abuse and vitriol that was being directed his way, from the Ally Pally crowd.

Unfortunately the tactic backfired and not only did he lose the match, he also lost his love for the game, threatening to quit the sport, whilst at the very top of the rankings.

Since then the 38-year-old has won the World Cup of Darts, alongside his compatriot Jonny Clayton, as well as topping the Premier League table and narrowly losing in the final to Michael van Gerwyn.

What better way to answer his critics than to pick up one of the most revered trophies in the sport, the Betfred World Matchplay Phil Taylor Trophy?

We caught up with Gerwyn prior to the event and asked him a few questions ahead of his first round match against the dangerous Stephen Bunting.

Gerwyn, a lot of time has passed since last year in Blackpool, where you hit a 9-darter and came up just short against Michael(van Gerwyn) in the final. Do you look back at it with pride or a missed opportunity?”

“Bit of both really, I played really well through that event, came up against some really tough opponents and than just came up against Michael in the final, who just seemed to find a little bit more.”

“You must feel pretty bullish heading into Blackpool this week”

“Yeah, I’m in a really good place and am playing well, I feel like I can win many more tournaments over the next three years”

“It’s a unique tournament format and venue, have you come to really enjoy playing there? How do you feel about going back to the Winter Gardens?”

“Even though in my early career, I didn’t really do well there, it is one of my favourite events. It’s a special venue, it’s not a big crowd but the atmosphere is really good!”

You can back Price at 9/2 to win the Betfred World Matchplay and watch the full interview below.
