Wimbledon Tips: Three selections for Friday’s action
Day five at Wimbledon sees plenty of big names in action, including defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz, as well as world number one Jannik Sinner and women’s second seed Coco Gauff.
After coming so close to landing three winners yesterday (just needed Emma Raducanu to drop a set), I’ve picked out three bets for my Wimbledon tips for Friday, July 5, which you can find below.
Wimbledon Tips – Friday, July 5
Carlos Alcaraz to beat Frances Tiafoe 3-1 @ 12/5
Carlos Alcaraz is set to renew his friendly rivalry with Frances Tiafoe when the pair meet in the third round of Wimbledon on Friday.
The Spaniard extended his winning streak at SW19 to nine matches on Wednesday, when he recovered from an early dip to record a comfortable straight-sets victory against Australian Aleksandar Vukic.
Tiafoe, who lost to Alcaraz in five sets in the US Open semi-finals in 2022, downed Croatian Borna Coric 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-3 to earn consecutive wins at a tour-level event for just the third time this season, and book his place in the third round.
The American has a point to prove after a difficult 12 months on tour, resulting in him losing his top-10 spot in the rankings, and he won just one match on grass heading into this year’s tournament.
It’s clear that these two bring the best out of each other, but Alcaraz is on fire at the moment. I can’t see Tiafoe getting revenge for his US Open semi-final loss here but I think he’ll claim a set off the Spaniard.
Jannik Sinner to beat Miomir Kecmanovic 3-1 @ 13/5
Jannik Sinner’s quest for a second Grand Slam title continues on Friday, after the Italian survived a scare against his compatriot and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, coming through a thrilling four-set tussle to reach the third round.
The top seed won a closely-fought encounter to advance to the next stage where he’ll meet Miomir Kecmanovic, after the Serbian came back from two sets to one down to beat Dutch 27th seed Tallon Griekspoor.
Sinner, who’s victory kept him on course for a semi-final showdown with Alcaraz, leads 3-0 in the head-to-head meetings between the pair. The world number one won the most recent encounter in the 2022 Cincinnati Masters, after Kecmanovic was forced to retire.
The Italian shouldn’t have any problems here but I’m going for 3-1 in the set betting as the number one seed has dropped a set in each of his matches so far this tournament.
Correct Score – Coco Gauff to win Set 2 6-1 against Sonay Kartal @ 9/2
Another angle of local interest in this match as Coco Gauff will take on British wildcard Sonay Kartal.
World number 298 Kartal had to qualify for this year’s Championships after battling with undisclosed health problems for much of the past year, but followed up a career-best win over 29th seed Sorana Cirstea on Monday with a slice of history two days later – a 6-3 5-7 6-3 victory over Clara Burel.
Obviously, winning this match will be a huge ask of the qualifier, and with Gauff’s outright price being so short, I’ve opted for a correct score prediction for the second set.
Gauff has only conceded three games in both of her victories so far at this year’s tournament, and has won every set either 6-1 or 6-2. I’m expecting Kartal’s fairy tale maiden run at Wimbledon to come to an end here, and Gauff to win in dominant fashion.
