Venus Williams vs Elina Svitolina Prediction

The All-England Club chose Elina Svitolina, who is coming back from maternity leave and has raised her ranking back up to No. 75 in just three months, and Venus Williams (ranked No. 554 but a five-time champion) as non-Brit wild cards this year.

Of course, the draw gods decided they would meet in the first round. And they get a Center Court slot on Day 1.

Williams is 2-8 since last year’s Wimbledon, and has played just five matches in 2023 (only three since January). She had wild cards into two grass-court events and it was clear, at 43, that she’s as determined as ever. But a knee issue is seriously hampering her.

Williams vs Svitolina Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2019 US Open (R64) Outdoor Hard 6-4, 6-4 Svitolina
2019 French Open (R128) Outdoor Clay 6-3, 6-3 Svitolina
2017 Canadian Open (R16) Outdoor Hard 6-2, 6-1 Svitolina
2015 Rome Masters (R32) Outdoor Clay 6-4, 6-3 Williams

We’d expect her to go full out in what likely will be her final Wimbledon, which is why we think she can win a set. But Svitolina has won their last three matches (none since 2019, when they played at both the French and US Opens). She’s also healthy; Williams has been spotted limping around the All-England Club grounds.

Williams vs Svitolina Pick: Svitolina in Three Sets (+330)

Denis Shapovalov vs Radu Albot Prediction

Shapovalov is still in the top 30, and seeded No. 26 at Wimbledon. He’s a former semifinalist (in 2021, when he defeated Andy Murray and Karen Khachanov before losing to Novak Djokovic). And he got a very good draw in qualifier Radu Albot of Moldova.

But the 24-year-old Canadian is not in good form; he’s 10-12 on the season. Since losing in the third round at the Australian He has won back-to-back matches only once – at the French Open, where got a good draw and also reached the third round. And he went 1-2 during his grass-court tuneups.

So he’s had a couple of weeks to overthink this; he’s going to be tight.  Meanwhile, Albot won three matches in qualifying and has played plenty of grass-court tennis. And he’s hardly a Wimbledon rookie.

We expect the 2016 junior champion to beat Albot, who did get one win over him in his final match of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, on a quick indoor court in Bulgaria. But he’ll have his moments, as he has so many times of late. And Albot could nick a set.

Shapovalov vs Albot Pick: Shapovalov in Four Sets (+225)

Emil Ruusuvuori vs Stan Wawrinka Prediction

At age 38, Stan Wawrinka doesn’t know how many more Wimbledons he’ll have. And while he’s not a contender to win it all, he’s worked himself back from multiple knee surgeries to remain a fearsome player on the day. His best Wimbledon moments were a while ago – back-to-back quarterfinals in 2015 and 2016.

After two five-setters at the French Open, he didn’t play any of the grass-court warmups. But after 16 trips to the All-England Club, he won’t need to be reminded how to play.

That said, Ruusuvuori does have a 1-0 record against him. But that was during Wawrinka’s return to play; his actual ranking last summer at the Canadian Open was No. 322. And it still took Ruusuvuori three sets to beat him.

We’ve seen how Wawrinka has been battling in the best-of-five format – all of his matches at Grand Slams this season have done the distance.

So we think he’ll prevail, but that it will be complicated, as usual.

Ruusuvuori vs Wawrinka Picks: Match to Go Five Sets (+220); Wawrinka to Win in Five (+500)
