Wimbledon Betting Tips: Alcaraz ready to end Djokovic’s long reign as champion

We’re down to the final of the men’s singles at Wimbledon with the most prestigious prize of the tennis season up for grabs.

This year’s Wimbledon title will go to one of the pre-tournament market leaders, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic or world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who is chasing a first All England Club triumph.

It should be a thrilling encounter between the best players of the older and younger generations and while Djokovic last tasted defeat at Wimbledon in 2017, he may actually be vulnerable against one of the finest tennis talents to emerge in decades.

You have to go back to 2013 for the last time that Djokovic last lost a match on Centre Court – and that was when Andy Murray defeated him in the final to lift the title for the first time.

The super Serb has held the title since 2018 and in recent years only eight-time champion Roger Federer went close to dethroning him in 2019.

Djokovic is bidding to draw level with Federer in terms of Wimbledon singles triumphs this year, but while he made light work of denying final opponents Kevin Anderson, Matteo Berrettini and Nick Kyrgios in recent times, this year’s second seed may find the top-seeded Alcaraz capable of causing the seasoned favourite plenty of problems.

Djokovic hasn’t been tested much at Wimbledon this year, although Hubert Hurkacz had upset opportunities in round four. But the Belgrade native stuck to his game and his temperament proved more solid in the key points.

A bigger surprise, though, was Andrey Rublev winning a set against Djokovic in their quarter-final clash. Rublev is a fine player but one whose weapons are limited, so for Djokovic to have to fight back from the loss of the opening set to the seventh seed should afford hope to Alcaraz.

The Spaniard, winner of the US Open in September, didn’t play in the Australian Open due to injury and so he’s actually trying to make it two fast-court Grand Slam tournament wins in the last two he has contested.

Alcaraz had to concentrate in the earlier rounds of this year’s Wimbledon to get past Alexandre Muller and Nicolas Jarry, before he stepped up his level to see off 2021 All England Club finalist Berrettini and Holger Rune in the fourth round and quarter-finals.

But any doubts over his ability to oust third seed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals were soon dismissed as the Juan Carlos Ferrero-coached charge won 6-3 6-3 6-3 in a hugely impressive performance.

Djokovic met with little trouble in his semi-final outing against Jannik Sinner – the Italian committed unforced errors way too easily during their many rallies. But as the defending champion may discover in the title match, Alcaraz is operating for much of the time these days at a different level to Sinner.

Djokovic won the day when the pair last met on clay in the French Open semi-final in June, but this offers an ideal opportunity for Alcaraz, who first beat his opponent on Madrid clay in 2022, to avenge his Paris loss.

Punters can definitely consider backing Alcaraz to win 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 in the set betting at 13/2, 11/2 and 6/1 respectively. But with the belief that the top seed may find set victories easier to come by than Djokovic, a straightforward win bet on the Spaniard at 13/8 looks the best advice.
