Dazzling debut
Lady Wellington, a 2-year-old daughter of Frac Daddy-Erin Commodity, recorded a 4 ½-length score in her first start, a 5 ½-furlong Tapeta race on Saturday. With Rafael Hernandez aboard, the Dale Desruisseaux trainee, bred and owned by Garland Williamson, crossed the wire in 1:05.08.
Hot pursuit
Trained by dual hall of famer Mark Casse for owner Tracy Farmer, 3-year-old Personal Pursuit won her first race on the campaign Saturday. Teaming with jockey Sahin Civaci, the daughter of Tapit-Maddie’s Odyssey rocketed away from her rivals down the lane to notch an eight-length triumph in the six-furlong race over the E.P. Taylor turf.
Cashing in
Stolen Money was once again money-in-the-bank after a 2 ¼-length victory at 1 1/16 miles over the Tapeta in the curtain-closing race on Saturday’s card. Ridden by Leo Salles, the 4-year-old grey son of We Miss Artie-How’s the Market earned his third victory on the season and fourth overall for trainer Danny Yu and owner Bushlot Farm Inc.
Consistent, consistent
Cara Cara, a 3-year-old daughter of Signature Red-Citrus Storm, won her third career race (all of them this year) after a dominant nine-length victory in Sunday’s first race, a 5 ½-furlong race over the Tapeta. The bay, bred and owned by Howard Walton and trained by John Mattine, is 3-1-2 from nine starts.
Zippy trip
Zippy Gizmo got up in the final strides to take top prize in Sunday’s $100,000 Bull Page Stakes. A son of Amis Gizmo-Avie’s Zip, Zippy Gizmo, with Kazushi Kimura aboard, the chestnut colt rocketed home along the inside to eke out a head score in the seven-furlong test for Ontario-sired 2-year-old colts and geldings. Bred and owned by Ivan Dalos, Zippy Gizmo is trained by Kevin Attard.
Worth hearing
“He’s not a big horse, but he’s got a lot of heart and he showed a lot of grit today.”
– Kevin Attard, trainer of Bull Page Stakes winner Zippy Gizmo.
Worth watching
Champion jockey Kazushi Kimura capped off a four-win day when he piloted Have a Souper Day to victory in the final race on Sunday’s card. Woodbine’s leading rider kicked things off with a victory aboard Cara Cara in the opener.
Worth knowing
A pair of stakes, including the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes, third jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown, highlight Sunday’s racing card. The $125,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes Presented by Ketel One, for 3-year-old fillies, at 1 1/16 miles over the Tapeta, is also on tap.
