Tonight’s clash at Celtic Park might be a dead rubber as far as Group E is concerned (Celtic are already out, Feyenoord are already guaranteed to finish 3rd) but there’s still plenty to play for for Brendan Rodgers men.
The beancounters in the boardroom will be eyeing a €2.8m prize that comes with all three points, whilst Rodgers himself will be desperate to put Saturday’s abomination at Rugby Park behind him at the earliest opportunity.
Then of course there’s the Hoops’ abysmal recent record in the competition, no win in 15 in the group stages, the last success coming in 2017 in Rodgers first spell in charge. What better opportunity to end that run than game which has little riding on it for the opposition?
Bet365 make Celtic 11/5 chances to claim the win with Feyenoord favourites at 23/20. There was little between the sides in Rotterdam until the Dutch side broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. The Bhoys were ten reduced to nine men in the second half and the match was beyond them, eventually finishing 2-0.
Ordinarily that 11/5 on the home win would be of interest but it won’t be the usual raucous atmosphere at Celtic Park tonight where ultras group, the Green Brigade, are still banned. That, combined with recent results, means things are a little flat in the east end of Glasgow at the moment. First goal will be crucial and if Celtic are to win, chances are they’ll need to score two or more goals.
With that in mind the 5/6 on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals appeals.
Newcastle must hope for Borussia Dortmund to do them a favour against PSG in Germany but first they must take care of their own business, by beating AC Milan, if they’re to qualify for the last 16.
The Magpies looked out on their feet in their 4-1 weekend defeat at Spurs, which followed hot on the heels of a 3-0 defeat at Everton last midweek. But they’re back on home turf tonight and that’s where they’ve been at their best.
With both teams tied on five points the qualification scenario for Milan is similar, they need to win and hope Dortmund win too. But a draw at St James’ Park would mean an exit from Europe altogether due to their inferior record compared to Newcastle.
Eddie Howe’s men kicked off their campaign with a thrilling 4-1 win over PSG and can dig deep to give themselves a shot at qualifying against Milan. Back the Magpies at 19/20.
Antwerp face the prospect of exiting the competition without a point unless they can take something from tonight’s match against Barcelona, but the Belgians have so far looked out of their depth and that’d unlikely to change this evening despite there being nothing at stake for Barca.
Double them up with Atletico Madrid for a 6/4 Spanish Double. Atletico have been the most impressive in Celtic’s group and can secure top spot with a win over visitors Lazio.
In the championship we’re all aboard the QPR train again at even money. Rangers have found a new lease of life under Marti Cifuentes and have won three in a row. A win tonight would take them out of the drop zone and level on points with opponents Plymouth who have failed to win any of their 10 away matches so far this season (D3 L7).
