Washington Commanders Betting Preview
The Washington Commanders finished at .500 last year, despite playing an odd number of games, thanks to a tie that helped them finish with an 8-8-1 record. This year, the Commanders will have a new starting quarterback, as Taylor Henicke and Carson Wentz are both gone. Here, we look at the new-look Commanders offense in our 2023 Commanders season preview and we make our pick in the season win total market for this squad.

Washington Commanders Picks, Predictions & Betting News
Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Jacoby Brissett, Andrew Wylie
Key Departures: Taylor Heinicke, Carson Wentz
It was a relatively uneventful offseason from a player personnel standpoint for the Commanders. They ditched Heinicke and Wentz, as it looks like Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett will split quarterback duties in some fashion. Other than that, things were relatively quiet, which is great for a franchise that has had so many off-field issues with their ownership over the last few years.
Washington Commanders Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 4.9 (T-27th) | 5.1 (T-22nd) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.0 (T-27th) | 4.3 (T-15th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 6.8 (T-21st) | 6.8 (T-22nd) |
Points Per Game | 18.9 (24th) | 19.7 (T-23rd) |
Turnovers | 23 (T-17th) | 24 (T-20th) |
Offensively, the Washington Commanders went through a lot last year. They tried and failed to get things going with multiple quarterbacks, and they lost a running back to gun violence (and amazingly saw him return to the field, thankfully). They could be better offensively this year just by virtue of having some continuity on this side of the ball in 2023.
Washington Commanders Defensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.2 (T-9th) | 5.7 (T-26th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.4 (T-15th) | 4.1 (T-8th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 6.3 (T-10th) | 7.3 (28th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 20.2 (T-7th) | 25.5 (25th) |
Takeaways | 18 (26th) | 19 (T-21st) |
Washington was strong defensively, ranking in the top-10 in yards per play allowed and points per game allowed. Their front four is still going to be a huge problem for opposing offenses, as Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and Daron Payne will be a handful for even the best offensive lines. But this team does need to get better at turning opponents over to be a true defensive force.
Positives & Negatives
The biggest positive for the Commanders going into 2023 is their defensive line, which can serve as the great equalizer in many games for this team. They even gave the Eagles trouble last year, something not many teams were capable of doing.
But the quarterback situation for this team is a huge question mark going into this year. Washington is either going to start a first-year starter in Howell, or they are going to start Jacoby Brissett, something many teams have done without success over the last few years. That is a big concern for a team that looks good in so many other areas.
2023 Washington Commanders Win Total Prediction: Over 6.5 Wins
This one could be close, but Washington should be able to go over the 6.5 win total that has been set for them going into this season. Even if they struggle at the quarterback situation, the Commanders have the defense and the skill position players on offense to get to around eight wins on the year.
