Vehicle Maintenance: Common Problems and How to Solve Them

When it comes to owning a vehicle, regular maintenance is essential to keep it running smoothly and to prevent breakdowns. However, even with the best care, vehicles can still experience problems that require repairs.

As of 2023, according to data compiled over Statista, there are approximately 20.68 million registered motor vehicles in Australia. With such a large number of vehicles on the road, it’s not surprising that there are frequent maintenance issues that owners face.

As per the data from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), car owners in Australia spend an average of at least $10,000 per year on vehicle maintenance and repairs, depending on the type of motor vehicle. The RACV’s Car Running Costs 2022 report notes for example, that on the average, medium-size cars can cost $16352.26 while owners of large SUVs may be expected to spend $19,445.04 every year in maintenance costs.

Vehicle Maintenance Problems & Solutions

Here are some common maintenance problems that vehicle owners face and how to solve them.

Battery Issues

One of the most common issues that car owners face is a dead battery. A battery can die for a variety of reasons, such as leaving the lights on, extreme temperatures, or a faulty charging system.

To prevent a dead battery, make sure to turn off all lights and accessories when the engine is not running. It’s also important to get your battery checked regularly to ensure it’s holding a charge. If your battery does die, you can jump-start it or replace it with a new one.

Flat Tyres

Flat tyres are another common vehicle issue. Tyres can become flat due to punctures, wear and tear, or damage to the sidewall, especially after driving for very long distances.

To avoid flat tyres, ensure you regularly inspect tyre pressure and promptly replace worn tyres. If you do get a flat tyre, you can replace it with a spare or get it repaired. While some auto maintenance experts say that rotation helps spread the wear and tear, you must be ready to invest in a fresh set of tyres.

Brakes Problems

Brake problems can be dangerous, as they can affect your ability to stop your vehicle. Signs of brake problems include squeaking or grinding noises, a soft or spongy brake pedal, or the vehicle pulling to one side when braking. Some vehicles can even alert you of brake deficiencies through special alarms and the dash will also show you a red or orange brake warning light.

Prevent brake problems by getting it checked regularly and replace worn brake pads as needed. If you notice any signs of problems, get them repaired immediately to ensure your safety.

Engine Problems

Engine problems can range from minor issues, such as a check engine light, to major problems, such as a blown head gasket. Signs of engine problems include poor performance, strange noises, or warning lights on the dashboard.

To avert engine issues, make sure to get regular oil changes and tune-ups. If you notice any signs of engine problems, get them checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible.

Overheating

Overheating can be a serious problem for your vehicle, as it can lead to engine damage or even a complete breakdown. Causes of engine overheating include a low coolant level, a faulty thermostat, a broken water pump, or a clogged radiator.

Avoid engine overheating by regularly checking your coolant level and following your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for inspecting and servicing the cooling system. If your engine does overheat, turn off your vehicle immediately and call for assistance.

Transmission Problems

Transmission problems can be costly to repair, so it’s important to catch them early. Signs of transmission problems include slipping gears, difficulty shifting, or strange noises.

To steer clear of transmission problems, make sure to adhere to a regular maintenance schedule and regularly check the transmission fluid. If you notice any signs of transmission problems, get them checked out by a mechanic.

Regular maintenance is necessary for keeping your vehicle running smoothly and preventing breakdowns. Staying informed about common maintenance problems and addressing them can help maintain your vehicle’s good condition and prevent expensive repairs.
