From a (in Tassie terms) relatively aged vineyard on the banks of the West Tamar. Young Gun Matthias Utzinger is passionate about Riesling. The fruit is hand-picked, then destemmed and soaked on skins for 24 hours. Fermentation in stainless steel and old oak, with maturation of 4 months on full lees. ~4g/l residual sugar. No malolactic fermentation before sterile filtration. Simple, yet elegant and lovely packaging.
Utzinger Wines, Riesling, Tasmania, 2024
Pale hue with a green highlight. Highly aromatic. Rosewater, bergamot, lemon/lime, fly spray, sea spray, apricot flesh, moulding clay and struck match. Structure and texture while maintaining linear precision. Refreshing lemon/lime sorbet summery citrus lilt before more serious and richer orange and stone fruits. Acidity very present but tempered with phenolics from the lees ageing resulting in a delicious release.
