The US Open has reached the quarter-final stage, and there is a shock omission from Tuesday’s play after defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek was sent packing in the fourth round by Jelena Ostapenko.
Ostapenko’s reward for victory over Swiatek is a last-eight showdown with home favourite Coco Gauff, while French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova meets Sorana Cirstea.
In the men’s draw, all eyes will be on 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, and he does battle with Taylor Fritz while there is an all-American affair as Frances Tiafoe locks horns with Ben Shelton.
Tuesday’s US Open Betting Tips
- Coco Gauff to win 2-1 v Jelena Ostapenko @ 11/4
- Over 21.5 games in Sorana Cirstea v Karolina Muchova @ 8/11
- Novak Djokovic to win 3-0 v Taylor Fritz @ EVS
Coco Gauff to win 2-1 v Jelena Ostapenko @ 11/4
Ostapenko sprung a real surprise with her three-set victory over Swiatek in the last round, but the Latvian may struggle to reproduce those giant-killing heroics against Gauff.
Gauff is arguably in the form of her life, with the 19-year-old having lost only one of her previous 16 matches and having claimed hard-court titles in Washington and Cincinnati within the last month.
However, she has been severely tested in three of her four wins at her home Grand Slam, needing to go the distance before prevailing against Laura Siegemund, Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki.
That should offer some hope for Ostapenko to at least get a set on the board, and it is interesting that each of her last eight matches have gone to a deciding set.
Over 21.5 games in Sorana Cirstea v Karolina Muchova @ 8/11
Muchova has been one of the season’s form players, having finished runner-up at the French Open as well as making the final in Cincinnati.
It is, therefore, understandable that the Czech talent is favourite to come through this quarter-final clash with Cirstea, a player she has defeated in three of their four previous meetings.
However, Cirstea should be full of confidence after claiming the scalps of world number four Elena Rybakina and Belinda Bencic and is unlikely to go down without a fight.
Muchova got the better of Cirstea 7-5 6-4 in Montreal at the beginning of August, and this contest should go over 21.5 games as well.
Novak Djokovic to win 3-0 v Taylor Fritz @ EVS
After surviving a scare in five sets against Laslo Djere, it was normal service resumed for Djokovic in the fourth round as he eased past Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo in straight sets.
And the Serbian is fancied to record another routine victory against Fritz, who tends to go into his shell when faced with the truly elite.
Fritz has lost all seven career meetings against Djokovic, six of which have seen him fail to get a set on the board.
The American has yet to drop a set in his four matches at Flushing Meadows, but the highest-ranked player he has come up against was world number 74 Juan Pablo Varillas.
