We’ve already seen some of the Premier League’s U21s on the end of a thumping in the EFL Trophy this season and seven of them are in action tonight.
Leicester City and Manchester United’s Academy sides lost 7-1 and 8-1 to Wigan and Bolton respectively in the last round of ties, exposing the gulf that can sometimes be thrown up in this competition.
That said, Spurs’ kids put five past Colchester United and Liverpool’s youngsters ran out 3-0 winners against Morecambe. The latter make the short trip to Blackpool, who should provide a sterner test than the Shrimps, which sees the Reds priced at a huge 13/2.
The one Academy side that catches the eye are the young guns of Arsenal who travel to Exeter City.
The Grecians were thumped 9-0 by Reading in the competition in September and have lost four in a row in the league. They did knock a much-changed Luton Town side out of the Carabao Cup but that’s been the only bright spot recently.
That would suggest Arsenal, who are 3/4 to win, can cause the League One side some problems and get on the scoresheet.
There’s usually goals guaranteed in games featuring the U21 sides. In 23 games so far in the competition 83 goals have been scored, averaging 3.61 goals per game.
So look for a little four-fold featuring the game at Exeter, add in Aston Villa’s kids’ trip to Charlton and the aforementioned Blackpool v Liverpool U21s. Complete the quartet with goals at Reading v Swindon.
