On Wednesday, it looked like the Tour de France might become a stroll for defending champion Jonas Vingegaard. But only 24 hours later, the race was back on and in a big way.
Having trailed in Vingegaard’s wake on the Col de Marie Blanque on stage five, Tadej Pogacar delivered a blow of his own on stage six, powering away from the Dane to claim the stage and claw back some valuable seconds on his great rival.
Any further skirmishes between the pair will likely be on hold until the end of next week as the race doesn’t hit the high mountains again until the peloton enters the high Alps a week on Friday.
Stage seven should be all about the sprinters with a pan-flat route finishing in Bordeaux.
Jasper Philipsen has taken both sprint finishes at this year’s Tour so far, but could this be the day when Mark Cavendish finally becomes the most successful stage winner in the Tour’s long history?
Tour de France stage seven betting tips
- Caleb Ewan to win stage seven @ 7/2
- Sam Welsford each-way to win stage seven @ 20/1
Caleb Ewan to win stage seven at 7/2
It’s three years since Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan last claimed a stage success at the Tour De France, but the first two sprint finishes of this year’s edition suggest that another may not be far around the corner.
Ewan has come third and second to all-conquering Philipsen so far, but a superb turn from the Belgian’s support cast has been a key factor in his success.
There hasn’t been much to separate the two speedsters at the line, and in the chaotic finales that usually define sprint finishes, there will be a day when Philipsen’s team don’t receive the golden highway they enjoyed on stages three and four.
History shows that when Ewan finds his form that he tends to keep it, winning multiple stages at the 2019 and 2020 Tours as well as the 2019 & 2021 editions of the Giro d’Italia, and he could get the ball rolling for further success in Bordeaux.
Sam Welsford each-way to win stage seven at 20/1
If Ewan is pipped to the line again, then it could be by a fellow Aussie this time.
Sam Welsford hasn’t been involved in the sprint shake-up as yet, but he has shown his speed at intermediate sprint points on numerous stages.
Welsford doesn’t have the same leadout power as some of the other sprinters, but he is adept at surfing the wheels of his rivals and looks a nice each-way proposition at 20-1.
The 27-year-old has won only three times this year, but the first two of those victories, at the Vuelta a San Juan, came against an extremely strong cast of sprint luminaries, including Fabio Jakobsen, Sam Bennett and Fernando Gaviria.
