The culmination of the FedEx Cup Playoffs with the $18 million dollar prize begins Thursday at the Tour Championship from East Lake Golf Club just outside Atlanta.
This is the fifth year of the altered FedEx Cup format which sees Scottie Scheffler starting the tournament in the lead. He’s ahead by two strokes over BMW Championship winner Viktor Hovland, with every golfer’s score staggered based on where they’re ranked. Scheffler was the front-runner last year, but wound up letting the FedEx Cup slip through his fingers, as Rory McIlroy won it for the third time.

The betting favorite is Scottie Scheffler at +150, as he enters with a two-stroke edge over Viktor Hovland. Rory McIlroy, who overtook Scheffler to nab his third career FedEx Cup title last year, is the second choice at +330, as he starts three adrift. Four-time winner in 2023 Jon Rahm is the only other triple digit priced golfer at +750, beginning four behind Scheffler.

Rory McIlroy Dominates Tour Championship
Since this is just the fifth year of the current FedEx Cup format, it is important to note the starting positions for all golfers competing. Naturally, the top players on the points list will have a better chance of securing victory, as world #1 Scottie Scheffler begins at 10-under par, with the 26th through 30th ranked golfers starting a full ten strokes behind.

McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup three times, including twice in the current iteration with the starting strokes. In 2019, he began a full five behind, and in 2022, the Ulsterman was six off the pace to begin the tournament.
In the last nine events he’s teed it up in, McIlroy has finished no worse than a tie for ninth, including a Genesis Scottish Open title. In that span, he’s tops in total strokes gained, and second tee-to-green along with ball striking, of those competing at East Lake. At +330, he doesn’t present a ton of value, but with his current form and love for this track, he’s a very worthwhile wager.

In the two postseason tournaments, Cantlay is third in SG: tee-to-green, fourth in total strokes gained, and fifth in ball striking.
- Xander Schauffele (+3000): It will be a big high to climb, starting seven off the lead, But Xander Schauffele cleans up at this track. He won the tourney in 2017, then was 7th the following year. From 2019 onward, without starting strokes, he would’ve placed second, had the lowest gross score in 2020, and was third best in 2021. In the last 24 rounds at this course, the X-Man is top-three in total strokes gained, ball striking, tee-to-green, short game and putting.
