Better call Saul
Trainer Saul McHugh, owner Robyn Brohman, and Taquanyah, a daughter of Silent Name (JPN), all notched their first stakes win in Saturday’s $100,000 Eternal Search. McHugh co-bred the 6-year-old mare (who paid $14.10 for the victory) with Brohman.
High Five!
Jockey Rafael Hernandez won five races on Sunday, including back-to-back scores in the fifth (Poppy’s Joy) and sixth (Compton). The multiple graded stakes winning rider also hit the century mark in wins and now has 103 victories on the campaign.
Masterclass
Hunt Master, ridden by Jeffrey Alderson, dug down deep to win his first stakes race when he took all the spoils in Sunday’s $100,000 Overskate. Trained by Angus Buntain for Susan Rasmussen’s Openwood Farm, the bay gelding, who is now 5-8-3 from 24 starts, paid $13.90 for the win.
Need to know…
Apophis, a Chiefswood Stable homebred trained by Layne Giliforte, broke his maiden courtesy of a brilliant wire-to-wire score in Sunday’s second race, a 1/16-mile tilt on the inner turf. Under Rafael Hernandez, the 3-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG), earned a two-length score and paid $7.60 for the win.
Live racing continues this weekend. On Sunday, rookies step into the spotlight in the Grade 3 $135,000 Mazarine Stakes Presented by Ketel One, and the Grade 3 $135,000 bet365 Grey Stakes.
