Racing on Thursday in the UK and Ireland comes from Bellewstown, Haydock, Kempton (AW), Newbury, Perth, Tipperary and Yarmouth.
One of our fancies is at Perth where a John McConnell mare can get off the mark over fences. She made a pleasing chase debut at Wexford last month and there looks to be more to come from this Irish-trained horse.
Selections
- Perth 15:18 – Pearl Of The West @ 9/4
- Yarmouth 15:30 – Zafaan @ 15/8
- Tipperary 18:15 – Sharjah @ 10/11
Tip 1
PEARL OF THE WEST is a five-time winner over hurdles. She has also been successful twice on the Flat, so she knows how to get her nose in front. Her chase debut at Wexford (2m4f) last month suggested her opening victory over fences is unlikely to be far away.
The nine-year-old jumped well in her beginners’ chase, coming home in second place. Unfortunately for her connections, she bumped into a smart JP McManus-owned horse from Jessica Harrington’s yard.
McConnell’s 9/4 mare features on the Betfred Betfinder as one of the most Napped selections this afternoon. She only has four rivals to beat this time, and off this mark of 119, she has a great chance of going one place better on her second outing over fences.
Tip 2
ZAFAAN showed what he was capable of on his latest outing when he scored at Doncaster in a 1m contest to break his maiden. He stayed on strongly in that race to get up by a small margin at the Yorkshire racecourse.
Kevin Philippart De Foy’s 15/8 gelding is now stepping up in trip to 1m2f and this distance is likely to suit him. The handicapper has put him up just 2lb for his success, which keeps him off a mark he can work with.
The son of Zoffany has only featured five times in his career, so he remains unexposed. The excellent Billy Loughnane has been booked for the ride and he will take a useful 3lb off the horse’s back.
He has been in excellent form this week, so he is likely to be riding full of confidence.
Tip 3
SHARJAH (10/11) is a six-time Grade One winner who has been one of Willie Mullins’ most consistent two-mile hurdlers over the last few years. He is making an early seasonal reappearance this time around in this Grade Three contest and, based on ratings alone, he should have far too much class for his rivals.
The 10-year-old was not at his best last season, as he failed to prevail in six outings. However, he did finish second to State Man in the Grade One Morgiana Hurdle, while he was less than a length behind Fil Dor in the Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran Park.
Mullins’ 155-rated hurdler had run well during the summer before. If he produces anything near his best in this Grade Three contest, he is likely to record his first success since the 2021 Matheson Hurdle.
