There’s a brand new hotspot that’s set to light up Sydney’s CBD this spring. Spread across two levels at 11 Young Street, Quay Quarter Laneways is now home to two fresh venues—Disco Pantera and Tigra—offering double the fun under one roof.
Disco Pantera, inspired by 1970s New York, brings the disco vibe with a modern spin. Whether you’re after a nightcap or feel like dancing to an eclectic mix of DJs, this place delivers a top-notch nightlife experience. Conversely, Tigra mixes the lively laneway cultures of Barcelona and Tokyo, creating a spot for daily aperitifs and tasty snacks.
These new venues are a true family affair, years in the making. Gordon and Ross Purnell, who first got a taste of the industry growing up in Scotland, have long dreamed of opening a place together. After refining their skills at renowned spots like Hawksmoor and Panda & Sons, they’ve now brought their passion and expertise to Sydney’s hospitality scene with Disco Pantera and Tigra, blending their love of entertaining and travel.
“We were inspired by our favourite places around the world, like Barcelona and Tokyo, where unexpected flavours and top-quality ingredients come together in a relaxed yet electric atmosphere,” says Ross Purnell.
Downstairs, Tigra channels the vibrant energy of Barcelona’s streets, with a decor that nods to the famous Spanish artist Joan Miró, and the quirky bars found in Golden Gai, Shinjuku. The result is a blend of Spanish and Japanese influences, offering a unique hospitality experience.
Ross Purnell, known among friends for his passion for cooking and entertaining, has personally crafted an inviting menu of daily snacks and small plates to share at Tigra.
Expect dishes like Koshihakari ‘cat’ rice with Yarra Valley salmon roe and white soy yolk, anchovy soldiers with fennel and chives, blood sausage with gremolata and red chilli, and whipped scallop with bottarga and crudites. Enjoy these alongside an aperitif or explore the extensive wine list featuring over 20 varieties by the glass, showcasing both innovative newcomers and established favourites.
After Tigra, head upstairs to Disco Pantera—a charismatic cocktail bar that captures the allure of New York’s buzzing nightlife. Reflecting the unique flair the Purnell brothers are known for, it’s the perfect spot for a simple nightcap or a night of dancing to the weekly DJ line-up. “Working with interior designer Cass Siow, we’ve carefully selected vintage lighting, deadstock tiles, and reclaimed wood and stone to bring our vision of a space full of soul, playfulness, and warmth to life,” says Ross Purnell.
The brothers have created an impressive lineup of drinks at Disco Pantera, featuring fresh and inventive flavour combos that celebrate seasonal produce. Look out for cocktails like the ‘Chimichurri Margarita,’ the ‘Alpine Sazerac,’ and the luxe ‘Cleopatra Martini,’ a striking drink that pays homage to ancient high society with goat’s milk-washed gin and a touch of blue spirulina oil. The standout ‘Pantera Creaming Soda’ offers a playful twist on the classic milk punch, infused with a hint of essential oil that nods to disco-era colognes.
“Our love for hospitality shows in every detail. We want to create a space where everyone feels welcome to create memories and have an unforgettable time,” says Gordon Purnell.
