And if you’re in the racing mood, read to the end to check out our top car-themed slot picks.
Hamilton and Verstappen crash
You’ll all know who Lewis Hamilton is but if you’re not too familiar with Max Verstappen, spoiler alert: he’s very good! He’s by far and away the best in the world right now but a few years ago, Hamilton regularly challenged him.
We saw one of the craziest British Grand Prix moments back in 2021, when both drivers were battling for the title. As tensions flared during the race, Hamilton crashed into his rival, forcing him to retire. Hamilton ultimately won the race, but Verstappen had the last laugh at the end of the season as he came out on top.
Priest protest
If you went to watch a Formula One race, the last thing you’d expect to see is a protesting priest. Well, if you were at the 2003 British Grand Prix, that’s exactly what you would’ve seen!
Neil Horan, often referred to as ‘The Dancing Priest’, ran onto the track during the race in an orange skirt, with several drivers having to swerve to avoid him. It wouldn’t be his last sporting adventure – he went on to attempt protests at the Epsom Derby, the Athens Olympics marathon and the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The Mutton Grand Prix
It’s not just priests that wander onto the track at Silverstone. In 1947, a group of friends took to the course to race around in their very own version of the British Grand Prix.
Sadly, as the drivers raced home, an unfortunate sheep unknowingly walked into their path and was hit. The race was affectionately labelled the Mutton Grand Prix in honour of the poor sheep.
Schumacher and Hill collide
The second crash in our list involves another legend of the sport. Michael Schumacher was won seven Formula One titles, the joint-most alongside Hamilton.
One of those wins came back in 1995 but it almost went pear-shaped at the British Grand Prix. As rival Damon Hill went to overtake the German, the two drivers crashed, forcing them both to swerve off the track. Luckily for Schumacher, he still went on to win the championship.
Taxi for Senna
Ayrton Senna was one of the greatest drivers of all time, winning three championships before his tragic death. Despite all his wins, one of his most iconic moments came in a race where he only finished fourth.
At the 1991 British Grand Prix, the Brazilian ran out of fuel on the finish line, leaving him stranded. Luckily for him, Nigel Mansell was on hand to save the day – the British driver gave Senna a lift back to the pits on the back of his car.
