PvP Season 1 Breakdown
In Warcraft Rumble, the PVP mode changes every 2 weeks based on three categories:
- Map
- Towers
- Modifiers
Let’s dive into our recommendations for the current setup:
- Map
- Alterac Valley
- Towers
- Dragon Towers
- Modifiers
- Clean Fight
The Best Units for Alterac Valley (MVPs)
Alterac Valley is a 3 lane map, with important resources in each of the lanes. On the left and right are gold mines, and on the middle row there are 2 chests in close proximity to each other.
Baron Rivendare
Baron Rivendare continues to be an oppressive PvP MVP by consistently being one of the strongest leaders. His key strength – the overwhelming map pressure and control he provides by constantly summoning 2 skeletal mages regardless of whether he is actually played on the field – is further highlighted in Alterac Valley with 3 separate lanes which each contain valuable resources.
Instead of being required to split his forces across 3 lanes, he can focus on a push in a single lane while his free ranged frost mages can march down the other 2 lanes and deny the gold mine/chests unless the opponent commits additional minis against the mages. Further, his frost mages will go on to push the towers, applying frost to the towers which is especially strong when the towers are the enhanced Dragon Towers or Rocket Towers.
His only downside is that necromancer units are not too great at PvP and he has to fill 2 of his necromancer trait slots with minis which are average at best, usually either skeletons, meat wagon, or necromancer, all which which trades badly into S.A.F.E. Pilot and Whelp Eggs, two very popular unbound PvP units. Ghoul can also be played, though he is a very inconsistent tank.
Prowler
Prowler is a cheap fast unit that has moderate HP and can charge to quickly 1-shot squishier ranged units. Send him down the middle lane whenever the chests are up.
He is especially strong in Alterac Valley as the 2 chests are located very near each other, shortly after charging to the first chest, he will reach the second chest and be in the area of denial to prevent your opponent’s mini from claiming the chest.
Prowler can also be used in either of the side lanes to quickly deny enemy kobolds. Its fast movement speed gives him an advantage over his usual competitor, Tauren Stonehoof, who also charges, but is less preferred due to his slower movement speed.
An important interaction is that he is bulky enough to sustain an invisible S.A.F.E. Pilot crash + assault shot. This makes it difficult for the opponent to steal your chest early in the game by crashing SAFE into your chest.
For talent choices, both Predatory Instincts and On the Prowl are good picks. Do note the Predatory Instincts will weaken his matchup against invisible S.A.F.E. Pilot’s as they might both walk past each other, whereas On the Prowl would force her out of invisible and let him get a kill.
Dark Iron Miner
In this map with two hotly contested gold mines that are roughly equal distance to each other’s towers, kobolds are easily denied by minis. Dark Iron Miner provides an additional method to secure the gold mine and is also a melee unbound which lets him be summoned to contest the middle chest spawn in a pinch. He also provides a decent frontline for the rest of your units at 2 gold and can be considered a less tanky Quilboar with utility.
Talent choices would include Gold Mine, to further enhance his gold mining area denial by placing mines atop gold mines, forcing a mini commitment before deploying a kobold. Dark Iron Armaments can be considered if a frontline is required if the rest of your deck lacks other front liners.
Usual Top-tier PVP Units That Are Particularly Good on Alterac Valley
S.A.F.E. Pilot continues to dominate with her map-wide presence to capture chests and deny gold mines, and her ability to trade advantageously with nearly 80% of the meta PvP units roster by assassinating them.
Further, she can be crashed on the bridge in the middle of the map above the 2 chests to provide cover fire while the minis underneath are unable to attack her. She continues to see a 100% inclusion rate for all top PvP decks. She is usually run with Gnomish Cloaking Device, but Comin’ In Hot! is another good option for her to quickly snatch chests.
Gryphon Rider is still strong being a cheap flyer that has very long-ranged attacks. Her increased range allows her to safely hit minis away from most splash AoE, unlike harpies. Her cost being at 2 allows her to minimize loss of value if the opponent decides to use SAFE pilot to counter her, and allows her HP allows her to survive an equal leveled Chain Lightning.
She can also be directed to the bridge above the middle of the map to provide safe cover support in the fight over the chests underneath. On weeks where there are Dragon Towers, she can survive longer due to her long-range attacks placing her further from the breath.
Whelp Eggs is a strong unbound mini that can be used to distract any melee unit that attempts to take chests or is sent to deny the gold mines, and still push effectively after. However, they are weaker on weeks when the Dragon Tower or Rocket Tower are up as they both are killed instantly due to splash when in range of the towers.
The Best Units for Dragon Towers (MVPs)
Dragon Towers deal elemental damage on a frontal cone attack, based on the distance away from the tower. Melee units suffer the most from Dragon Towers due to the increased damage taken, and ranged units in general are better against Dragon Towers. Resistant minis also take 50% reduced elemental damage and can survive longer.
General Drakkisath
It is no surprise that a leader who grants all allies resistance when talented would be strong during weeks when Towers deal elemental damage.
Although a very slow unit, his pushes are very difficult to deal with, especially when accompanied by a shaman who grants him armor, making him resistant to damage of both types and healing him. At the tower, he and his units take lowered damage, making it easier to get the tower down.
His downside is that he is a very slow unit and you will have to play several slow minis to push with him, so you have to run a few unbound units or fast units to capture the chests and defend gold mines, or face a resource disadvantage.
Darkspear Troll
Perhaps the most interesting interaction, Troll’s range and heal over time when talented allows him to tank a Dragon Tower infinitely as he heals whatever damage he takes from the Tower. His low cost also allows him to be deployed to control lanes, which is especially useful in maps like Alterac Valley where you need to spread your forces over 3 lanes.
Huntress
Huntress has two things going on for her. She is ranged, and she is resistant. This means that she can survive very long against a dragon tower. In these weeks where more ranged mini are run to counter Dragon Towers, less melee minis are run, including her usual armored counters like Footmen and Earth Elemental.
However, she still suffers from being a high-cost 5 gold mini. In maps such as Alterac Valley, where 3 lanes are equally in demand of attention, she is much harder to use as it might mean using up too much gold that you are unable to respond to a threat in another lane.
Usual Top-tier PVP Units That Particularly Are Good vs Dragon Towers
Quilboar is one of the few tanks that continues to perform well under Dragon Tower. Being resistant and unbound means that he can be summoned to the sides of the tower just before your main forces reach the Dragon Tower.
Gyphon Rider with his added 3 range also survives a decently long time against Dragon Towers even though he is a 2-cost unit. He continues to be the most used flyer unit in PvP as Harpies perform terribly against Dragon Towers.
The Best Warcraft Rumble PVP Decks for Season 1
Below you can find some of the meta decks you will play with and face off this season. These decks are not set in stone so swap some minis out if you are facing more of a certain type of deck.
Baron Rivendare (Undead PVP Deck)
Baron Rivendare’s PVP deck revolves around map control and snatching gold mines and chests. Skeletons can be deployed on the chest or at mines to secure them and can be used to distract minis for a short while given that one of them is resistant and another armored.
Necromancer will be played in a left lane with the arrow pointed right to get him atop the bridge to constantly fire off frost on enemies and to hit chests. Use Huntress to effectively trade against their minis who tried to snipe the chest, who will definitely kill them in a 1 v 1 given her ambush and high damage, and protect her with Quilboar.
She will then go on to push against the enemy tower, necessitating an answer from your opponent as the Dragon Towers are unable to deal damage to her. Baron is your tank against any unit that makes it near your towers and you need a distraction while the towers take them down, or used offensively with Huntress as he is also a fast unit and can help tank any threats summoned to kill Huntress.
General Drakkisath (Blackrock PVP Deck)
General Drakkisath’s PVP deck is a slow push deck that attempts to destroy the enemy tower with a push that cannot be stopped. Drak should always be played with Shaman for a very study combo.
With Resistant granted to all surrounding minis, Shaman is unlikely to be able to be sniped by SAFE Pilot. Use your Dark Iron Dwarf to mine the lane opposite from the lane Drak is pushing in.
Pyromancer or Whelps can be included in the Blackrock slot to further support Drak with elemental damage. Chain Lightning’s damage will be buffed on all nearby enemies due to Drak’s debuff, and can be used to clear minis like S.A.F.E. or Gryphon that it normally cannot without his debuff.
Maiev Shadowsong (Alliance PVP Deck)
Maiev Shadowsong’s PVP deck is harder to use with the rotation to Dragon Tower as they employ very few ranged units. However, her strength still lies in absolute map dominance with 6 unbounds played, being able to answer to any threat while the opponent scrambles to capture resources.
Like Baron’s deck, Maiev’s objective is map pressure which is especially effective in a 3-lane map. While enemy units need to be spread out and take time to walk to the objectives, Maiev can reinforce a certain objective until she is guaranteed to have taken it.
A Prowler down the middle lane will secure your chests, along with Worgen, Whelps and SAFE to counter any units sent to challenge the capturing of their chest. By capturing all the resource points and consistently providing an answer to whatever minis your opponent summons, you will eventually starve them of resources and get a push going that cannot be stopped.
Old Murk-Eye (Beast PVP Deck)
Old Murk-Eye’s PVP deck is a swarm deck that attempts to use cheap Murlocs to overwhelm your opponents. Since Murk-Eye is easily sniped by S.A.F.E, Chain Lightning, or Whelps due to his low HP, he needs to stockpile close to 10 gold and unleash his threats across different lanes.
His free Murlocs will ensure that most lanes are pressured and opponents will have to scramble to defend each lane. Where a lane is pushed in, Quiboar and Billzard can be used to distract the Dragon Tower from wiping out your squishy minions.
Grommash Hellscream (Horde PVP Deck)
Grommash Hellscream’s PVP deck aims to make a fast push in a single lane and whelm the towers. It is more difficult to pilot than other decks as it is an ‘all in’ deck that requires you to commit most of your resources in a single lane to capture the objective and then hopefully use that momentum to push down their towers.
The carry of this team would actually be Darkspear Troll and Gryphon rider, who will be busy assaulting the Dragon Towers while Grom and Tauren clear the path of any defenders summoned to kill the both of them. As Grom and Stonehoof are rather expensive units, Bandits are included to help provide a cheap cycle and to hopefully capture chests while the enemy is distracted by your large push.
