I love Riesling wines. Riesling grapes allow the winemaker to produce wines in many styles, from bone dry, to lusciously sweet ice wine. Riesling has a rich history in Europe that spans centuries. Its origins can be traced back to the Rhine region of Germany, where the grape thrived in the cool climate and slate-rich soils along the riverbanks. It was during the 18th and 19th centuries that Riesling rose to prominence as the most popular wine in Europe. Its popularity can be attributed to its exceptional quality, striking a balance between acidity and sweetness, and the ability to express the unique terroir of each region it was grown in. Riesling became the wine of choice for European aristocracy, and its reputation spread across the continent. Riesling adorned the tables of royal banquets and courtly gatherings, where it was savoured and celebrated as a wine fit for the elite. Even renowned writers and poets, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, praised the virtues of Riesling in their works.
