Tennis Betting Tips: Navarro can stun defending champion
Things are heating up at this year’s US Open with the second week of matches fast approaching and attention about to turn to the last 16.
The cream is slowly rising to the top and it is the bottom halves of the men’s and women’s competitions which take centre stage on Sunday with Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Alex Zverev among those in action.
Here is a look at three tennis betting tips for Sunday, September 1.
Tennis Betting Tips
Set Betting – Taylor Fritz to win 3-0 vs Casper Ruud @ 13/8
It has so far been a good effort from the American contingent at this year’s US Open and Taylor Fritz is the highest-rated player from his country in the men’s competition.
The 12th seed has reached the quarter-finals of the US Open just once in his career but he should fly through to that stage this year when he takes on Casper Ruud.
Fritz has barely broken a sweat at Flushing Meadows, winning all three of his matches against Camilo Ugo, Matteo Berrettini and Francisco Comesana without losing a set.
Ruud, meanwhile, is not at his strongest on the harder surface and that was evident in the third round.
The Norwegian ace found himself two sets down against the unseeded Shang Juncheng and, although he recovered to win in five sets, he will not get any second chances against Fritz, who is value to win the contest 3-0.
Match Betting – Emma Navarro to beat Coco Gauff @ 7/4
Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff remain two of the sharpest American talents on the WTA Tour and their clash in the last 16 is not to be missed.
There is not a lot between the players and Gauff can count on her experience of winning the major last season, but at the prices, Navarro is worth chancing to win.
Navarro defeated Gauff on her way to the Wimbledon quarter-finals earlier in the summer and she will have less expectation on her shoulders.
Gauff has also underwhelmed a little of late, winning just one of her last three matches prior to the US Open.
Navarro, meanwhile, looked in good shape before Flushing Meadows, reaching the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open, and she is the best bet to win this match.
Match Betting – Frances Tiafoe to beat Alexei Popyrin @ 1/1
Another American who could prevail on Sunday is the big-hitting Frances Tiafoe.
Renowned for his explosive serve, Tiafoe typically thrives during the North American hard-court swing and he has impressed at the US Open in each of the last two seasons.
In 2022 Tiafoe was a semi-finalist and he reached the quarter-finals in 2023, so he knows what it takes to go deep in New York.
Ahead of the US Open, he carved a path to the semi-finals of the Washington Citi Open and was also runner-up at the Cincinnati Masters.
He could be a touch fatigued from his five-set win over compatriot Ben Shelton in the third round but his next opponent Alexei Popyrin was also tested last time out.
Popyrin defied the odds to dump out second seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round, doing so in four sets.
But playing Djokovic is both physically and mentally taxing and following it up with victory over home talent Tiafoe might be a step too far for the talented Australian.
