Sunday’s Lucky 15 Tips: Shep looks set for a cracking day
Plenty of good Sunday racing to get our teeth into on July 7, for our Lucky 15 tips. I’m heading to Chelmsford, and an all-weather meeting containing some of the game’s top names including Hayley Turner, Tom Marquand and Silvestre De Sousa, to name but three.
If you fancy checking out exactly what’s on offer, our Horse Racing Odds can be found right here. The action in Essex kicks in at 13:40.
Lucky 15 Tips Sunday
Chelmsford
15:15 – Pinafore @ 9/4
A talented four-year-old Dark Angel filly trained by William Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand.
Pinafore was a running-on second in a similar contest at Musselburgh 36 days ago under Cieren Fallon. She’s earned a career-high rating of 100 but in the context of this level weights Listed heat she’s highly-placed as the third-best treated.
She’s run well at Lingfield and Kempton previously, so isn’t entirely unfamiliar with all-weather racing. She comes here with for me a fabulous shout.
15:50 – Rowayeh @ 15/8
The famous Shadwell silks, Jim Crowley up, and Owen Burrows trains.
This four-year-old Dubawi filly produced a career-best last time at Ascot 18 days ago in a slightly higher grade and was running on at the finish (fourth, beaten under 5l), over a mile. She gets 10f here and it looks sure to suit now as a more mature individual.
Rowayeh debuted on the all-weather back in October 2022 at Kempton, and Ascot showed clearly that a race of this kind is well within her compass. Crowley is one of our very best jocks in my view and he’s operating at a 28% strike-rate over the last fortnight.
16:25 – Mountain Road @ 7/4
Callum Shepherd rides, for Newmarket trainer Dave Simcock.
Mountain Road took a slightly lower-grade handicap at HQ very impressively (4l) a matter of 15 days ago. That was over 1m 6f, but the five-year-old Churchill gelding gets this 2m trip just fine.
He’s up 4lb for that bloodless win and meets old rival Hedonista on better terms than when going down narrowly to Ed Walker’s filly in October. Callum’s ridden him many times before and strikes me as the most likely winner on Sunday.
17:00 – Red Hat Eagle @ 4/1
Another comfortable last-time winner, again at HQ, taking a Class 5 handicap by 2.25l. The four-year-old Gleneagles gelding is another ride for Shepherd, this time for William Knight, also based at Newmarket.
He’s proven on this surface and at this track, and is in the form of his life. He’s up 6lb from HQ but that could be manageable. Knight is in red-hot order too, with a 39% strike-rate over the past 14 days.
If you’re playing have fun, take care, and above all else enjoy.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today’s selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £190 for your total £7.50 stake.
