Wednesday, July 19, at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, England bowler Stuart Broad’s struck first blood for the home team by dismissing Australian opener Usman Khawaja.

James Anderson, a local player who had been rested at Headingley, was back in the lineup when England won the toss and decided to bowl first.

David Warner quickly hit a boundary off Stuart Broad’s bowling to get the game going. In his third over of bowling, the England bowler trapped Khawaja in front of the stumps.

Khawaja was struck on the front pad by Broad’s delivery, which slanted in to beat Khawaja and was bowled beyond the off-stump line. After the ball tracking revealed three reds, the Australian hitter left after contesting the ruling through DRS.

With Khawaja’s departure, broad is now only one scalp away from joining an exclusive group of athletes who have taken 600 Test wickets.

At an average of 24.41, the seasoned bowler has taken 17 wickets, including Khawaja’s in the current Test. In the opening Ashes match in Birmingham, he got three wickets in each innings.

At Lord’s, he took 4/65 in Australia’s second innings, which saw them dismissed for 279 runs. In the third Test, Broad took five wickets, two of which were David Warner’s. The Nottinghamshire quick has now defeated the Australian opener 17 times.

In England’s comeback in the 371-run chase, Broad and his captain Ben Stokes had a 108-run. The lower-order left-handed hitter has accumulated 56 runs in the series’ first five innings.
