Stockport County vs Wrexham Prediction: Can County find another three points?
Two teams who have been wed together over the few years meet again at Edgeley Park as Stockport County host Wrexham in League 1. They fought for promotion from the National League in 2021/22, a battle that Stockport won, and then both came up from League 2 last term as once again the Hatters beat the Welsh side to a league title.
It means this game has developed into a bit of a rivalry of late, and their consistent progress means that once again they are locked in a battle for promotion – this time up to the Championship. They meet on Saturday (15:00, Sky Sports+), with a vital three points on the line. Below you can find my Stockport County vs Wrexham predictions featuring team news and betting tips.
Stockport County vs Wrexham Betting Tips
Team News
Ryan Rydel and Macauley Southam-Hales were handed their first starts of the season for Stockport last weekend and given they hammered Bolton 5-0, I think we can expect the duo to start again.
Dave Challinor went with Ben Hinchcliffe in goal and he is expected to continue in place of Corey Addai while Tanto Olaofe missed out with illness but is expected to return to the squad this weekend.
Wrexham’s injury list got an awful lot worse this week Arthur Okonkwo, Luke Bolton and Will Boyle were all assessed. Boyle and Bolton both picked up injuries at Port Vale in midweek, while Okonkwo had a scan on his wrist after suffering an injury during his clean sheet against Mansfield last Saturday.
Parkinson explained: “Unfortunately, we picked up two injuries on the night – Luke Bolton and Will Boyle – and both look like 4-5 week lay-offs, which is obviously frustrating. Prior to the game, we had some bad news when we had to send Arthur Okonkwo for a scan after he damaged his wrist on Saturday. Unfortunately, he has broken his wrist and is going to be out for a minimum of six weeks.”
Josh Adam, Matty James and Jon Dadi Bodvarssonn all made their first starts for the club in midweek and could be brought into the team, while goalkeepers Callum Burton and the experienced Mark Howard both played 45 minutes in goal as Parkinson assessed who his first choice would be in Okonkwo’s absence.
Stockport County vs Wrexham Odds
Stockport are priced at 13/10 to win this game, with Wrexham available at 21/10. The home side have an implied win probability of 43%. A draw can be backed at 12/5, over 2.5 goals is 10/11 and BTTS is 4/6. Louie Barry is the favourite to score first at 6/4.
Stockport to win @ 6/5
Stockport are just so unpredictable right now but I will back them on home soil. I won’t pay too much attention to the 2-0 defeat they suffered to Tranmere in the EFL Trophy, given they had already qualified from their group, but their last three league results have been a 4-1 win over Reading, a 5-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers and a 5-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
Plenty of goals, but not much consistency. Clearly they are a strong League 1 outfit and they have the ability to beat the top teams, but they also received a pasting from top of the table Wycombe that could serve as a warning. I actually believe this will be a close encounter between two well-matched sides, but given Wrexham’s bout of injuries, especially the one to Okonkwo, I’m leaning towards the Hatters.
Wrexham haven’t won any of their last three away games in all competitions, including that 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Harrogate Town recently. Parkinson is trying to find a solution to their injury crisis, and I feel Stockport could make them pay at Edgeley Park.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Louie Barry to score at anytime @ 15/8
One of the best players in the third tier for me. The Aston Villa loanee now has 10 goals in 15 appearances this season which puts him level with Kwame Poku of Peterborough in the race for the Golden Boot.
Barry has scored four goals in his last three home matches in the league, and six of his 10 goals this term have come on home soil, so given I believe Wrexham will concede a couple here, it makes sense to back the youngster to find the net once again.
