The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving cautiously with star quarterback Russell Wilson after he awoke on Thursday with calf tightness.
The injury kept him off the field for his first training camp practice with the Steelers. Despite that, head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t voice much concern with the situation.

“Starts aren’t always ideal, but that’s like life, man,” Tomlin said after practice via ESPN. “Russ woke up today, his calf was tight. It was my decision to sit him down today, create a little short-term discomfort for him, not allowing a small problem to become a bigger problem.”
Tomlin voiced that the team will monitor it with a “day-to-day” game plan moving forward. Wilson is expected to get the first crack at the starting job, but the door remains open for backup Justin Fields.
The former first-round pick took first-team reps on the practice field on Thursday in place of Wilson.

“He said, ‘Be ready to take some reps for the one today,’” Fields said, adding that he had been reviewing the playbook before he went to bed. “But’s good to face some short-term memory, some adversity, and some stuff that’s not expected because we’re going to face things in games that aren’t expected. It’s about how we react to those situations and how we adjust.”
Wilson will resume the first-team duties once he returns to the practice field. His availability in training camp will be crucial in helping him build much-needed chemistry with his new teammates as he heads into his first campaign with Pittsburgh.
