The Day One highlight, on a day literally full of them. The Group One St James’s Palace Stakes, for 3-yr-old colts, run on the round mile course, at 4.20pm.
*Two talented individuals dominate the market.
St James’s Palace Stakes 2023 Tips
On a day when three Group Ones hit you squarely between the eyes within the first four races, this is arguably the most jaw-dropping of the lot. The winners of both England and Ireland’s 2000 Guineas do battle over Ascot’s round mile.
*Chaldean, son of Frankel, scorer at Newmarket. *Paddington, victor at the Curragh, and by French sire Siyouni, who was beaten in this by Canford Cliffs over a decade ago.
Winning this race was ironically one of Frankel’s least imperious performances, but no matter – what a champion. So, it’s advantage Chaldean in the genetic stakes, but I felt Paddington achieved more especially in a visual sense in winning the Irish version.
Took a wee while for the penny to fully drop perhaps, but was powering clear late in the piece, running impressively through the line. I can see that class and tenacity, appetite if you will, serving him well here.
Chaldean has done nothing but impress, though will his fire burn quite as bright in the white-heat of those last couple of crucial furlongs? We’re about to find out ..
I’ll be having a little each-way on Mostabshir too – could be absolutely anything and improved markedly last time to win impressively at York. Is entered in the Sussex at the Glorious meeting, and handled of course by the Gosdens.
