SPL Winner Odds 24/25: Celtic & Rangers ready to do it all over again
Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a successful return to Parkhead last season as he masterminded Celtic’s third-straight Scottish Premiership title, remaining unbeaten in four games against Rangers in the process.
Below you can find the SPL winner odds 24/25 as Gers boss Philippe Clement looks to take the title back to Ibrox following a three-year drought.
Celtic @ 4/9
Unsurprisingly, 54-time champions Celtic have been installed as heavy favourites to lift the SPL title again next May, a feat which would make it four-in-a-row for the Bhoys. Crucially, it would also draw the club level with Rangers on 55 top-division titles.
Rodgers’ side finished the 2023/24 campaign eight points clear of their bitter rivals, who lost three of the four Glasgow Derbies, the other finishing in a draw.
The emphatic nature of Celtic’s victory last season marks them out as clear contenders to take the crown again in 2025 but, at the time of writing, they’ve not been too busy in the transfer market, something that has caused consternation amongst the Parkhead faithful.
Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel has arrived as, arguably, an upgrade on the recently-retired Joe Hart, with fellow shot-stopper Viljami Sinisalo bought from Aston Villa to beef up the goalkeeping department, but there has been no movement further up the field.
Celtic are reportedly closing in on the captures of Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo, two players who served them so well on loan last season, but there are other areas to improve such as in the centre of defence.
Moreover, star midfielder Matt O’Riley continues to be linked with a move away from the club, with Europa League winners Atalanta and Premier League new boys Southampton said to be particularly interested in the 23-year-old Denmark international.
Losing O’Riley would deal a huge blow to Rodgers’ plans for the upcoming campaign, but it’s something he has surely factored into his thinking, and he will be desperate to see the club reinvest the proceeds from his sale if he is to depart this summer.
Despite the transfer window doom and gloom, Celtic have enjoyed an encouraging pre-season, beating each of DC United (4-0), Manchester City (4-3) and Chelsea (4-1) in the USA.
The Bhoys begin their SPL season by hosting Kilmarnock at Parkhead on Sunday, and with only trips to Hibernian and St Mirren to follow in August, the lack of signings so far shouldn’t prove too troublesome this month, and a few quality additions before the deadline will ensure they keep their favourites tag heading into September and beyond.
Rangers @ 13/8
A run of 19 wins across 21 games between the start of October and the end of February had Rangers top of the table at the beginning of March, but after losing 2-1 to Motherwell, the Gers’ season imploded.
Clement’s side triumphed in just one of their next four fixtures to hand control back to Celtic, who never looked back on their way to making it a hat-trick of Premiership titles. Defeat in the Scottish Cup Final ensured more misery for the blue half of Glasgow, leaving Clement and co with plenty to ponder heading into the summer.
Rangers’ response has been to be active in the transfer market, turning Mohammed Diomande’s loan from Norsdsjaelland into a permanent move and signing Brazilian defender Jefte (£675k) and Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane (£1.9m) for fees, while also bringing in Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Liam Kelly on frees.
Vaclav Cerny is another headline arrival after joining from Wolfsburg on a season-long loan; the Czech Republic international appeared at Euro 2024 and struck four times in the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign.
The Gers have lost considerable experience at the heart of defence after Connor Goldson recently swapped Scotland for Greece by joining Aris Limassol.
Perhaps the exit of a stalwart was for the best, though, as Clement looks to shape a new spine at Ibrox.
Ultimately, Rangers have it all to do if they are to wrestle control back from Celtic at the top of Scottish football, with at least a few more top-quality additions required. Furthermore, they will have to erase the mental scars of last season when they lost three times to their rivals in the league before suffering heartbreak against them in the Scottish Cup Final.
Pre-season hasn’t exactly been encouraging either with defeats to Ajax (1-2), Manchester United (0-2) and Birmingham City (1-2) followed by a 4-4 draw with Union Berlin last weekend.
Hearts @ 66/1
No club outside Celtic and Rangers has won the title since Aberdeen in 1984, highlighting the stranglehold Glasgow has on the top division, but if you’re feeling audacious, Heart of Midlothian are third in the SPL winner odds 24/25 at 66/1.
Hearts were the division’s closest challengers to the top two last season, but that term is used loosely as they finished 17 points behind runners-up Rangers and 25 points off the champions.
Steven Naismith looks to be making decent strides at the Edinburgh club and they look well-placed to finish as ‘best of the rest’ again, having ended the previous campaign 12 points clear of Kilmarnock in fourth, but the idea of them making a bid for the title is fanciful, at best.
Aberdeen @ 100/1
Can the Dons run it back 30-plus years and produce the shock of all shocks?
No is probably the politest way to answer that question.
Aberdeen endured a disastrous 2023/24 campaign, sacking Barry Robson in January and going through two interims – Neil Warnock and Peter Leven – to end the season in the relegation group, though four wins from their last five games did add some gloss and ensured a seventh-placed finish.
