Southampton vs Hull Prediction: Saints to continue promotion march
Southampton will look to move back into the automatic promotion places this week as they take on Hull City on home soil in the Championship on Tuesday night (KO, 19:45).
Russell Martin’s team are two points behind second-placed Leeds United, but their game in hand will give them a chance to climb above Daniel Farke’s side. It sounds simple for the Saints, but Liam Rosenior’s Hull have won two successive away games and will look to cause them problems at St Mary’s.
Southampton vs Hull Betting Tips:
Team News
Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes missed last week’s 2-0 win over West Brom, and he is set to be on the sidelines until March with a muscle injury. His absence means Shea Charles should get the chance to impress from the start alongside Stuart Armstrong and William Smallbone.
Martin remains without full-back James Bree as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem.
Hull are still without striker Liam Delap, meaning Noah Ohio and Billy Sharp will continue to lead the line for the Tigers. Midfielder Tyler Morton is a doubt after suffering an ankle injury in the 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town last weekend.
Match Odds
Southampton’s home advantage makes them 8/15 favourites for Tuesday’s battle on the south coast, and they have won 11 in a row at home.
Martin’s side are unbeaten in 13 in front of their own supporters, but those that expect them to stumble can back the draw at 10/3, while Hull are considered 5/1 outsiders.
Over 2.5 goals is well fancied at 4/7, while Saints striker Adam Armstrong is the favourite to score anytime at 23/20.
Southampton to win and both teams to score @ 15/8
After they slipped up against Bristol City, Southampton bounced back perfectly against West Brom, picking up a clean sheet on the road in a 2-0 success.
They have been in sublime form at home since the end of September, winning 11 on the spin in all competitions. They have racked up the goals during that time as well, scoring three or more in seven of those victories.
However, Hull have done well themselves, winning four of their last five in the Championship. They have won their last three games away from home in the second tier, scoring five goals in the process.
While they have shown they can compete and keep their fans entertained on the road, those wins came against teams in poor form in Sunderland, Rotherham United and Huddersfield.
Southampton are one of the best teams in the division, and they should come out on top in an entertaining battle.
Over 42.5 booking points @ 8/11
Southampton and Hull sit within the top 10 in the Championship for yellow cards, and this could be a fiery encounter on the south coast.
The two teams have picked up 153 yellow cards between them, and there were no fewer than eight cards dished out when the pair first met back in October.
Feisty games like that often live long in the memory of players, and both teams will be fired up for the occasion. Southampton can return to the top two with a win, while Hull could move into the playoffs if they succeed and results go their way, so we expect neither side to go down without a fight.
