- South Korea is expected to dominate both the men’s and women’s individual archery competitions
- Marcus D’Almeida of Brazil (+600) was the World Archery Federation Archer of the Year in 2023
- Men’s and women’s archery will take place at the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris, France from July 25 to August 4, 2024
Archery debuted as an Olympic sport in Paris in 1900 and was removed from the Games for a half-century before returning to Munich in 1972. Both men’s and women’s individual archery events begin with a ranking round of 64 before the athletes compete head-to-head. The archer with the highest score at the end of each set scores two points and the first to six points wins the match.

South Korea’s dominance
South Korea leads the all-time archery medal count with 43 total, followed by the U.S. with 33. The Koreans have captured every women’s individual Olympic title since 1984 with the exception of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. However, three-time gold medalist An San won’t be in Paris after being eliminated in the 2024 Korean national team trials.
That leaves Lim Sihyeon (+300), who topped those very same trials. Having become only the second archer in history to claim four of the first five stages of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, the Asian Games triple gold medalist has been ranked as the world No. 1 for most of 2023. She’ll be joined at her first Olympic Games by teammates Nam Su-hyeon (+800) and Jeon Hun-young (+1200).

Other medal hopefuls
Yang Xiaolei (+800) leads a surging Chinese team that’s defeated Korea in the first two Archery World Cup stage finals this year. The 23-year-old set a personal best of 673 points in the qualifying round of the third stage in Turkey as the only recurve woman to pass 670.
Casey Kaufhold (+1400) hopes to become USA’s first recurve women’s individual Olympic medalist since 1976. The 20-year-old suffered a second-round elimination in Tokyo, but she recently won a test event in Paris and the 2024 Pan American Championships.

Korea’s big three
Kim Woo-jin (+400), Kim Je-deok (+450) and Lee Woo-seok (+500) all hail from South Korea.
Woo-jin is a three-time world champion in the men’s individual recurve event and has won two team gold medals at the Olympics. However, Woo-seok has defeated Woo-jin in six of 10 meetings in international competition over the last six years. There’s also Je-deok, who won the mixed team and men’s team events at Tokyo 2020 at just 17 years old.

Two more contenders
Marcus D’Almeida (+600) has enticing odds considering he’s ranked No. 1 in the world. The Brazilian took home the bronze at the world championships last year and captured the South American title in March.
Mete Gazoz (+800) aims to repeat as individual Olympic gold medalist. The Turk also holds 2023 world title and recently claimed the European championship.
