Saturday Racing Tips: A Star performance expected at Newmarket

Saturday Racing Tips: A Star performance expected at Newmarket

It’s a bumper Saturday of racing action across Britain and Ireland with seven meetings taking place including the Northumberland Plate meeting at Newcastle.

The big card at Newcastle kicks things off with further afternoon cards from Newmarket, the Curragh, Windsor and Chester before evening fare from Lingfield and Doncaster on a day when Flat racing holds sway.

Amongst out Saturday fancies is a hugely promising 2YO filly for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin at Headquarters.

Selections

  • Newmarket 12.40 – Star Of Mystery @ 6/5
  • Newcastle 2.05 – Matchless @ 50/1
  • Curragh 4.00 – Al Riffa @ 6/5

Tip 1

Listed fare opens the afternoon action on the July Course at Newmarket and STAR OF MYSYERY (6/5) should get favourite-backers up and running in the Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes over six furlongs.

The Godolphin-owned daughter of Kodiac began her career last month with a good second behind Carla’s Way at Doncaster, the winner since going off favourite in the Albany at Royal Ascot, before opening her own account with an 11-length demolition of 10 rivals at Haydock in the middle of the month.

That form marked her down as a young filly with a serious future and it’s no shock that Appleby looks to take her into Listed company now. The likes of Unbreak My Heart and What A Question should ensure this is a solid test of her credentials but William Buick’s partner is expected to pass with flying colours.

Tip 2

The Northumberland Plate is the big event at Newcastle this afternoon and with Betfred offering five places on the two miler, it might be worth taking a swing on something at a big price to make the frame.

Golden Rules is favourite and has a leading chance with Oisin Murphy on board but perhaps MATCHLESS (50/1) can outrun his price for trainer Jennie Candlish.

The Galileo gelding began life at Ballydoyle and was rated as high as 97 as a 3YO in Ireland. He won twice at Doncaster last year for Ivan Furtado (both at 1m2f) and added two hurdles successes during the winter just gone after moving to the Candlish team. One of those came here at Newcastle.

This spring he added another Doncaster win (1m4f, soft) before sound runs at Kelso (hurdles) and last month at Pontefract.

A mark of 88 seems fair and if Graham Lee’s mount relishes this stamina-test for the first time on the level, he may well outrun those tasty odds in a race with those five places to play for.

Tip 3

The Group 3 International Stakes at the Curragh on the middle afternoon of their Irish Derby Festival revolves around Al RIFFA (6/5) for the Joseph O’Brien team.

Though he was denied on his debut over 7f at this track, finishing second, he became a leading juvenile last season, culminating with his victory in the Group 1 National Stakes here in September.

The Wootton Bassett colt saw off some good rivals, including Proud And Regal and Shartash, in that contest and he very much looks like the sort that should improve as his stamina is teased out.

He tackles 1m2f now on this slightly belated reappearance and Dylan McMonagle’s partner is the one to beat.
