We had two games postponed in our Saturday Accumulator Tips column last week but the other four games all came good, albeit for a much smaller 8/1 price. A win however is a win.

We put up five games this week for a 35/1 fivefold including two top-of-the-table sides on the road…

Leg 1 – Middlesbrough vs Stoke City @ 8/11

Just over a month ago, I sat here writing this very column and put in Middlesbrough to beat Southampton. Michael Carrick’s side at that point hadn’t won a league game all season and there were certainly noises around the place as to whether he would survive much longer. They won that game and have tasted nothing but victory since.

Yes, if you’ve not been paying attention to the turnaround in fortunes at the Riverside, it may shock you that since that vital 2-1 win, they’ve won seven straight in all competitions.

On Tuesday night, they made the long trip down to Carrow Road and flat-out dominated. The 1-2 scoreline did not accurately reflect the balance of play, they could and maybe should have won by more.

Anytime you can back a team in an accumulator at 8/11, who have won every game for over a month, when they are facing a team sitting 13 places below them in the league table, it makes sense to do so.

Leg 2 – Sunderland vs Norwich City @ 11/10

Staying up in the North East where I’m taking the Mackems to turn around a shaky spell of form that has seen them drop out of the playoff places. Three straight defeats has curtailed what was some good forward momentum for Tony Mowbray’s side.

The first defeat came when they were down to ten men at home and capitulated in the second-half to the aforementioned Middlesbrough. After that, defeats on the road to Stoke and Leicester have given some cause for concern.

Deep down though, I’m still of the belief that Sunderland are a side more than capable of challenging for the top-six come the end of the season. Jack Clarke is enjoying a fruitful campaign having taken over as the main man following the departure of Ross Stewart at the end of the transfer window, scoring eight already.

Norwich have only picked up a solitary point from the 12 available in October, having suffered defeats on the road at Swansea and in back-to-back home games against Leeds and once again, Middlesbrough. I think the home side to get things on track far more than I do the visitors.

Leg 3 – Reading vs Portsmouth @ Evens

I hate putting my team into any of my columns but they are a value play in this fivefold. You can back top-of-the-table Pompey at Even money to go on the road and beat a Reading team who have only picked up a point from their last six matches.

As they are the club I support, I actually get to see a fair bit of John Mousinho’s men and I think they are a ways off compared to the likes of Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth from a year ago. The quality in League 1 is clearly significantly lower this time around.

However, they are still unbeaten outside of cup competitions and we are knocking on the door of November, not bad going that.

I wrote about Reading in my acca piece last week when I had them losing at Charlton. It is sad in a way to see what is happening at the club. They were a solid Premier League club for a while but that seems an awfully long time ago. The same I suppose could be said for the visitors on Saturday. Both teams could well escape the division next summer, just in opposition directions.

Leg 4 – Morecambe vs AFC Wimbledon @ 15/8

This is the biggest price of the five matches and honestly, I’m sitting here in my home office trying to work out why the home side are not the betting favourites in this match.

I know their recent form has been heavily influenced by a significant lack of quality on the opposing side of the pitch. What you can’t do however is just write off five wins in six and say it’s because they haven’t played anyone. The Shrimps are now just a point away from the playoff places and have two games in hand above all but one of the sides ahead of them. Whisper it quietly, they might actually be pretty decent.

AFC Wimbledon have been in a bit of a malaise recently and will be looking forward to seeing the calendar turn from October to November. A 0-1 win on the road at Harrogate was their only victory this month and they’ve grabbed two 0-0 draws as well. Strangely both of their defeats this month have come at home.

Dons’ manager Johnnie Jackson was not impressed by the first-half showing on Tuesday night when they lost 2-4 at home to Accrington Stanley. A better second 45 saw them make it a contest again but that has to be a concern.

With Morecambe in good form and AFC Wimbledon a bit shaky at the moment, I like this addition to the acca. Putting in this leg turns a 11/1 fourfold into the 35/1 price that it is at the time of writing.

Leg 5 – Kidderminster Harriers vs Chesterfield @ 8/11

Paul Cook’s side saw their game with Gateshead postponed last weekend but came back with a very strong 4-0 win over York City on Tuesday night. This is their last league game before they play in the tie of the weekend, as they face his old side Portsmouth in the first round of the FA Cup.

The Spireites are two points clear of Barnet with a game in hand at the top of the National League. It might not have the glamour of Wrexham and Notts County from a year ago, yet they might bring us just as enjoyable of a promotion race.

On Saturday they make the two-hour or so journey down the M1 to take on a Kidderminster side already looking over their shoulder. The Harriers do not have a great record at the Aggborough Stadium so far this season having already tasted defeat at the hands of Solihull Moors, Oldham Athletics and Barnet to go along with four draws and a win over Wealdstone.

With two teams having very different ambitions this season and the excellent form of the top side in the table, it is really tough to bet against Chesterfield and therefore I won’t.
