Salford vs MK Dons Prediction: Hendry to make former club pay

We’ve got some League 2 action on Monday night as Mike Williamson’s MK Dons travel to Salford City for a 20:00 kick-off. MK Dons were fancied to win the league before a ball was kicked, but they’ve lost two of their opening three matches. Meanwhile, Salford’s expectations may be lower, but they are still searching for their first win of the campaign.

Salford will be without defender Curtis Tilt after he was sent off at Chesterfield, so experienced former Premier League centre-back James Chester may come in for a start at the age of 35. Elsewhere, Karl Robinson’s side are struggling for goals, so more is expected of Cole Stockton and Ben Woodburn in the final third. 

MK Dons got their season going with a big win over Carlisle last time out so Mike Wiliamson is expected to stick with the same XI. Stephen Wearne, Alex Gilbey and Callum Hendry should make up the front three, with Ellis Harrison also pushing for a start.

I really fancy MK Dons to go up this season, as champions, so it’ll come as no surprise that I am backing them to win this game. They’ve had a slow start to the season but the 3-0 win over Carlisle will have filled them with confidence, and I think Williamson’s side will really kick on from here. 

They play the best football that the fourth tier has to offer, and I do think that will pay dividends across a 46-game season. I also think they are facing a poor Salford side who are likely to be somewhere in the bottom half of the table come the end of the campaign. With Gilbey pulling the string, I think MK Dons can come out on top.

Callum Hendry to score first @ 11/2

Hendry looks to have been chosen as MK Dons’ number nine this term, and he got off the mark last time out with a goal against Carlisle. That was the opening goal of the game, and the new-found confidence he will have should spur him on to bigger and better things. 

However, the main reason for this selection is the fact that Hendry is coming up against his former club for the first time. He spent two years at Salford between 2022 and 2024 scoring 23 goals in that time. He also left just three months after signing a new one-year deal, so the reaction he gets from the Salford fans will be intriguing to say the least.

When Williamson signed him, he said “He can be a real menace and sniff out goalscoring opportunities. I’m confident he’ll suit us and I’m delighted to have him.” I think he will find the net first in this clash.
