Melbourne has put a gap between the top four and the chasing pack after beating a depleted St Kilda outfit 12.7 (79) to 8.10 (58).
The Saints had been hoping to leapfrog the Demons into fourth spot, but lost Max King, Seb Ross and Zaine Cordy to game ending injuries.
St Kilda will be sweating on King’s injury in particular, after the key forward grabbed at the shoulder that kept him out of the first nine games of the season.

Ross was the victim of what looked like a serious hamstring injury, while Cordy copped a Steven May knee to the head in a marking contest and was ruled out with concussion.
