Romania vs Netherlands Prediction: Oranje to edge through to the quarter-finals
Romania and the Netherlands collide at the Allianz Arena in Munich for the round of 16 clash at Euro 2024 on Tuesday evening (17:00, BBC One), and some sense there could be an upset on the cards.
The Tricolorii topped Group E after some impressive performances, while the Netherlands had to settle for third spot in Group D behind Austria and France. Ronald Koeman’s side have much to improve on if they wish to venture far in this tournament, and Romania will provide them with a tough test. Read on for my Romania vs Netherlands prediction, including match odds and team news.

Romania are 15/2 to win this game in 90 minutes, which gives them an implied probability of 11.8%. The Netherlands are valued at 4/9, giving them a theoretical chance of 69.2%. If you see this tie going to extra-time, the draw can be backed at 100/30 (23.1%).
Romania are 7/2 (22.2%) to win the tie, while the Netherlands are priced at 1/6 (85.7%).
Both teams to score is marketed at 11/10 and over 2.5 goals is on offer at 10/11.
Netherlands attacker Cody Gakpo has scored twice already at this tournament and he is 13/8 to score anytime in this match. Razvan Marin has also scored two for Romania and he is valued at 8/1 to score at any stage during the match.

Team News
Romania will be forced into at least one change on Tuesday as left-back Nicusor Bancu is suspended due to picking up too many yellow cards. Right-back Vasile Mogos looks to be the most likely to come into the XI to cover for him.
Leading scorer Marin is set to be involved after training in the build-up to the match, having a brief spell on the sidelines to recover from work overload. It will be interesting to see who out of Ianis Hagi, Dennis Man, Florinel Coman and Valentin Mihaila will take the winger spots either side of Denis Dragus, but Man is most likely to take one of them.
Koeman is set to freshen up the Dutch midfield after he hauled off Joey Veerman after 35 minutes against Austria last time out, with the Netherlands needing to be much more dominant in the middle of the park.
Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee is fit again after a brief illness but Memphis Depay is likely to keep his place up top after opening his Euros account against Austria.
Netherlands and both teams to score – Yes (in 90 mins) @ 5/2
There has been nothing to shout about for the Netherlands thus far but sometimes we do see drastic improvements from teams once they navigate their way through the group stage.
It may not be much but I can see the Oranje showing more in this tie than they did in the group stage. Koeman has a strong squad of players but he needs to find a a way to best utilise them because so far his plan hasn’t been working.
With the likes of Depay, Gakpo and Xavi Simons in attack, the Netherlands should have the capability to beat Romania quite comfortably, but from what I’ve seen from both teams thus far, I don’t see that being the case.
I do think the Oranje’s quality can shine through in vital moments to get them through to the next round but Romania will be up for this challenge, and they themselves will be sensing an opportunity. I sense this will be a close encounter, with both sides scoring, but I am backing the Netherlands to come out on top.
Cody Gakpo 2+ shots on target @ 7/4
Liverpool’s Gakpo has arguably been the Netherlands’ brightest spark at the Euros so far and I expect him to be busy once again in Munich. Across the group stage, the attacker registered six attempts at goal and four of them were on target. Front man Depay has let fly more efforts (nine) but only two have hit the target.
Gakpo is the most accurate attacking player at Koeman’s disposal so the manager will be expecting a lot from him against Romania. I think 7/4 offers good value on Gakpo to have at least two shots on target in this contest.
He has been playing on the left so far and he likes to drift inside to shoot on his stronger right foot, but he has also been getting into some good positions centrally.
Netherlands to win 2-1 (in 90 mins) @ 15/2
If I had to give my score prediction, I’d have to go with 2-1 to the Netherlands for the reasons I gave above. I think Romania will make them work for it but the Dutch have got a point to prove.
With the profiles in their squad who can be the difference, I think they have more than enough to edge this contest and qualify for the quarter-finals.
