Former Australian bowler Glenn McGrath believes Pat Cummins and company did the necessary work to keep the Ashes urn. Despite criticizing the team for their unfavorable tactics in the fourth Test in Manchester, the former New South Wales seamer thinks the victory wasn’t ‘un-Australian.

On Day 5, there was no chance for play due to the ongoing rain, and the game was a tie. The 103-run combination between Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh, with the former striking a century, helped Australia retain a commanding lead the day before the decisive game.

McGrath said in his BBC column that despite being a bad strategy, Australia’s efforts aided the cause. He stated:

Although it wasn’t done in the typical Australian fashion, I wouldn’t describe it as “un-Australian” given this Test side has a great record. They carried out their duties. Despite the unsightly and depressing appearance, Australia’s strategies were successful. They came here with one goal in mind: to win back the Ashes, which they have done thanks to their 2-1 advantage with one match left.

The 53-year-old wants the visitors to play aggressively even if it means losing in the last Test at the Oval. He went on:

Australia may claim that this strategy was successful, but now that they have kept the Ashes, I would want to see them act more aggressively. Play freely and enter the field without hesitation. I would like to see Australia lose the last Test by standing their ground and truly taking it to England than to lose quietly.

The match in Manchester saw the World Test Champions substantially down the field. In batting-friendly circumstances, they only managed to score 317 runs, and by bowling inconsistent lines, they gave up a 275-run advantage.
