Red Sox vs Blue Jays Picks, Odds & Starting Pitchers (July 2)

  • Looking to avoid the sweep, the Blue Jays host the Red Sox on Sunday, July 2nd
  • In six head-to-head games this season, Boston has a perfect 6-0 record against Toronto
  • Below, we dish out the latest Red Sox vs Blue Jays odds, plus our best bet and picks

Once again, the Blue Jays (45-39, 23-17 home) are coming off a loss to a division opponent. This is a recording. Since the start of May, Toronto is a brutal 3-17 against AL East rivals, severely hurting their division odds, which were +189 at the beginning of the year, but now sit at +1500, a pretty big longshot.

On Sunday, July 2nd, Toronto tries to avoid a sweep at the hands of the visiting Red Sox (42-42, 21-21 away), who own a perfect 6-0 mark against the Jays this campaign, after a four-game sweep in the beginning of May at Fenway Park.

Opening pitch for the close-out game between these two is scheduled for 1:37 pm ET and can be watched on NESN in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada. For the latest Red Sox vs Blue Jays odds, read on below, while we preview this contest before giving you our prediction.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Boston Red Sox +167 +1.5 (-130) O 8 (-120)
Toronto Blue Jays -192 -1.5 (+110) U 8 (+100)

Despite their brutal performance against the AL East, oddsmakers have made the Blue Jays -192 moneyline favorites to get their first win of the season against Boston. Much of the reason for that has to do with Toronto sending ace, Kevin Gausman to the hill.

The over/under total for this contest is set at 8 runs, a number that these teams have exceeded in five of six games against each other this season.

Boston vs Toronto Probable Pitchers

Garrett Whitlock continues to fight for a permanent spot in the Red Sox rotation, although his inconsistencies and tendency to give up the long ball makes him tough to count on. He allowed six runs and two homers in his last start and has given up nine long balls in nine appearances this year.

Pitching has been a sore spot for the Bosox this season, as only four squads in the American League have a worse team ERA than Boston. Whitlock is one of four pitchers that has been in the rotation this campaign that owns an ERA above 5.00, not a stat that looks too pretty.

Whitlock vs Gausman Stats

Garrett Whitlock
VS
Kevin Gausman
4-3 Record 7-4
5.15 ERA 3.01
1.32 WHIP 1.13
.299 OBA .232
6.6 SO/W Ratio 5.4

No matter the MLB lineups he has to face, Gausman has been terrific for the Jays this season. He tops the American League in strikeouts and ranks seventh in ERA.

Over his last 10 starts, the righty has allowed more than three runs just once. However, he did have some issues with the Red Sox the only time he pitched against them this season. It was his worst outing of the year, as he allowed eight earned runs in his shortest appearance of the year.

Blue Jays a Terrible Straight-Up Bet vs AL East

Not to harp on this much more than we already have, but the Jays have proven to be a terrific team to bet against in the MLB odds when playing division opponents over the last couple of months. They have won just three of their last 20 against teams that reside in their division.

Blue Jays 2023 Record vs AL East Opponents

Team Record
Boston Red Sox 0-6
Baltimore Orioles 1-5
Tampa Bay Rays 3-4
New York Yankees 3-4

For the season, they are 7-19 against their own division while sporting a very impressive 38-20 mark against the rest of the league. It’s a trend that is becoming increasingly harder to ignore.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Picks

The last thing the Jays want to do is lose their seventh in a row to the only team in the division that currently has a worse record than they do. Especially coming off a heartbreaking finish in Saturday’s contest.

On the mound, the Blue Jays do have the decided edge, but keep in mind, Gausman got rocked in his previous start against Boston. For his career, he is 7-9 with a 4.48 ERA against the Red Sox.

At some point, the tide has to turn for the Blue Jays when facing the teams they see most often, Luckily for them, the MLB has changed its scheduling so that teams don’t meet division opponents quite as often.

Our prediction is to stick with the trend and bet against the Jays. Until they prove they can overcome, the AL East spell that seems to be cast on them, we can’t justify putting money on them, especially when there are plus odds to bet against them.

Pick: Boston Red Sox Moneyline (+167)
