As training camp around the league gets underway, the Baltimore Ravens further solidified their backfield.
The Ravens inked former Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon to a one-year deal worth up to $3.1 million. The 30-year-old brings much-needed depth to the running game with another proven talent.
He spent his first five seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he became one of the league’s most productive running back. However, his play has declined over the last two and half years with the Denver Broncos.
He’s coming off a lackluster 2022 campaign where he rushed for 318 yards on 90 carries and two touchdowns with 25 catches for 223 receiving yards in 10 games. Gordon struggled with ball security, fumbling five times before the Broncos released him after Week 11.
Since his breakout 2017 season, where he notched 1,105 rushing yards, he has fallen short of that mark in each of the last five years due to injury and inconsistent production.

Gordon enters a situation where he won’t be counted on as the bell cow back but more of a change-of-pace option. He has proven that he has a nose for the end zone with 55 rushing touchdowns, recording at least eight touchdowns in seven straight campaigns before last season.
He will compete for playing time alongside J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Gordon’s addition likes to come in connection with Dobbins being placed on the active/PUP list on Friday due to an undisclosed knee injury.
The Ohio State product has struggled to stay on the field, playing in only eight games last season and missing the entire 2021 season due to a torn ACL.
