Raiders make the shocking move to fire head coach Josh McDaniels

  • By Admin

After weeks of speculation, the Las Vegas Raiders have pulled the trigger on massive change.

The Raiders have fired head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler.

“After much thought about what the Raiders need to move forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave,” owner Mark Davis said in a statement via ESPN. “I want to thank them both for their hard work and wish them and their families nothing but the best.”

Las Vegas also parted ways with offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi. Linebacker coach Antonio Pierce will serve as the interim head coach while quarterback coach Bo Hardegree will assume playcalling duties.

The Raiders struggled to make headway under McDaniels, holding a 9-16 record without a playoff berth. His record is the third worst of any coach in franchise history with at least 25 games.

Las Vegas failed to make any significant progress offensively under McDaniels. Offseason addition Jimmy Garoppolo has struggled to find his footing, racking up 1,205 passing yards with seven touchdown passes to nine interceptions and a 78.1 passer rating in six games.

Garoppolo’s woes have resulted in his benching. As a result rookie Aiden O’Connell got the start in Week 9 against the New York Giants.

Las Vegas was a shell of a team offensively under McDaniels, underutilizing star wideout Davante Adams while Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs has underperformed. They hold the 31st ranked offense, which sits last in rushing yards per game, and 30th in points per game (15.8).
