Port of Brunswick Expands to Lead Ro/Ro Trade with Major Infrastructure Upgrades

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has approved the addition of 50 acres of paved vehicle storage at the Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal. This expansion will enable the terminal to handle increased trade more efficiently, solidifying Brunswick’s status as the leading U.S. port for Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) cargo.

GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch emphasized the port’s position as the nation’s premier gateway for Ro/Ro trade, citing its expansive capacity, strategic location, and top-tier service. The infrastructure investment is in response to growing demand from auto manufacturers seeking to expand their shipping volumes through Georgia. The new vehicle storage capacity will be operational by summer 2025, adding to the recent addition of 120 acres of paved storage.

According to GPA Board Chairman Kent Fountain, this latest expansion complements the $262 million already invested in auto storage and warehousing. With over 200 more acres available for future growth, Brunswick has unmatched potential to scale its operations in the Ro/Ro sector.

In Fiscal Year 2024, Colonel’s Island Terminal processed over 870,000 units of Ro/Ro cargo, a reflection of its growing dominance in the industry.

Brunswick Harbor Upgrades

The Port of Brunswick will also see crucial harbor improvements with $38 million in federal funding allocated for maintenance dredging and expansion projects. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to begin dredging the harbor by late 2024, restoring it to its full depth and enhancing vessel safety with additional maneuvering space.

August Cargo Surge

In August 2024, Georgia Ports saw significant growth, handling 74,630 units of Ro/Ro cargo—a 21.4% increase compared to the previous year. Savannah also reported a strong month in container volumes, moving more than 490,000 TEUs, driven by early holiday shipments.
