If you’ve wandered past 195 Brisbane Street recently, you’ve probably noticed the flashy new digs where the old Harvison Gallery used to be. Once a quiet, empty block, it’s now been transformed into something that stands out—a cheeky, retro-styled bar with gold-foiled pin-up girls and hand-painted signs boasting “Cold Drinks, Warm Service, and Hot Bartenders.” Yep, that’s Bar Love, the latest and most exciting addition to the neighbourhood between Northbridge and Highgate.
The heart and soul of Bar Love are two of Perth’s most loved bartenders, Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh. The dynamic duo met while working at Mechanic’s Institute, one of Perth’s top cocktail bars, and their friendship quickly turned into a shared passion for all things drinks and hospitality.
For those not in the loop, this patch of Perth is already a bit of a hotspot. It’s home to local gems like Golden Choice (where tropical fruits reign supreme), a string of wine bars, and some seriously good Vietnamese eats. And now, with Bar Love in the mix, it’s officially the place to be for anyone looking for a cracking good time with a cocktail in hand.
A Dive Into Bar Love’s Vibe
From the outside, the bold colours and playful signage of Bar Love give you a good idea of what you’re walking into—a quirky, maximalist, 70s-inspired haven that feels like stepping into the wild living room of your most eccentric art teacher. Inside, it’s all about rich, warm colours—think burgundy, tangerine, pale pink, and cream stripes running the length of the venue. Velvet love-seats are scattered around, and the décor is anything but understated. Mirror ball panther statues? Check. Bric-a-brac galore? Double check. It’s kitsch, it’s fun, and somehow it all works.
Bar Love leans hard into a warm, retro aesthetic that invites you to settle in and stay a while. Whether you’re lounging on a plush sofa or grabbing a stool at the bar, the vibe is laid-back and welcoming, with a cheeky edge.
Meet the Minds Behind Bar Love
The heart and soul of Bar Love are two of Perth’s most loved bartenders, Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh. The dynamic duo met while working at Mechanic’s Institute, one of Perth’s top cocktail bars, and their friendship quickly turned into a shared passion for all things drinks and hospitality. Between them, they’ve got decades of experience, and they’re no strangers to the national cocktail scene. Now, they’re bringing their A-game to Bar Love, and it’s safe to say, you’re in good hands.
Cocktails are front and centre here, with a seasonal menu that highlights both creative concoctions and rock-solid classics. Pip and Murray’s signature drinks include the playful Peaches & Cream Negroni and the Vamos Martini, a hybrid between an Espresso Martini and the viral Mont Blanc layered coffee. Oh, and if you’re after something a bit dirtier, Pip’s got you covered with what she proudly calls “the filthiest martini this side of a New York subway.”
But don’t worry if you’re not up for the fancy stuff—Bar Love keeps it real with a good mix of craft beers and classic cocktails, all served with a healthy dose of fun. There are four taps, including brews from Shelter and a guest rotation, plus a cocktail from Idle Hands Drinks Co. And when it comes to wine, the list is short and sweet, with a focus on value over rarity—because at Bar Love, it’s all about enjoying a great drink without breaking the bank.
Neighbourly Feels & Tasty Eats
Bar Love is all about community, and that extends to the food, too. While there’s no kitchen on-site, they’ve teamed up with their mates next door at Peasants Paradise to make sure you won’t go hungry. Dwight Alexander, the chef-owner of Peasants Paradise, is bringing his Modern African twist to classic bar snacks. Expect loaded fries, focaccia with dips, and seasonal sandos, all designed to pair perfectly with your drink of choice.
Whether you’re popping in for a quick drink or settling in for a session, there’s always something tasty on hand to keep you going.
The Dream Team
Pippa Canavan is no stranger to the Perth hospitality scene. With over a decade of experience, she’s built a reputation as a bartender who doesn’t take herself too seriously but knows how to make a seriously good drink. Her resume is packed with achievements, but one of her proudest moments has been co-founding Mix Haus, a not-for-profit dedicated to empowering women in the hospitality industry. Mix Haus’s efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity earned her the prestigious ‘Industry Leader’ award at the 2023 WA Good Food Guide Awards.
Pip’s not just about the accolades though (though she’s got plenty). She’s also been crowned Host of the Year at the 2023 Australian Bartender Magazine Awards, and named in Australian Bartender’s Top 100 Most Influential. Not bad for someone who still manages to keep things light and fun behind the bar.
Murray Walsh is equally impressive, with 15 years of hospitality experience across everything from fine dining to bustling rooftop bars. He’s been listed as one of Diageo World Class’s Top 100 Australian Bartenders three times, and his bars have consistently been recognised in national and state awards. But like Pip, Murray’s not here for the glory. For him, it’s all about creating a space where people can unwind, connect, and enjoy some good old-fashioned hospitality.
Bar Love: A Place for Everyone
Bar Love isn’t just another bar—it’s a place where everyone’s welcome and the focus is on creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Pip and Murray’s passion for their craft is evident in every detail, from the expertly crafted cocktails to the vibrant, eclectic décor. But more than anything, they’re all about ensuring everyone who walks through the door feels right at home.
So, if you’re in the mood for a drink that’s a little different, some top-notch banter, and a space that feels like your cool aunt’s living room (if she had a thing for disco panthers), head down to Bar Love. There’s always a seat waiting for you—and maybe even the filthiest martini you’ve ever had.
