The 72 holes of action in the race for Gold at Le Golf National starts on Thursday morning and our golf tipster Jamie Worsley is here to find some value in the First Round Leader betting market.

He’s picked out three names to consider backing. Check out who and why along with his Men’s Olympics Paris 2024 Golf FRL Tips with us right here at Betfred Insights…

Men’s Olympics Paris 2024 FRL Tips

  • Thomas Detry – 1/4 5 places – 1.25 pts ew @ 35/1
  • Guido Migliozzi – 1/4 5 places – 1 pt ew @ 45/1
  • Keita Nakajima – 1/4 5 places – 0.75 pts ew @ 66/1

The men’s Olympic competition starts in Paris tomorrow, and I’ve picked out a trio of competitors who can get their bid for a gold medal off to the best possible start at Le Golf National.

We are set for some rain early doors on Thursday and there is forecast to be a breeze on show throughout the day, blowing at a constant of around 9mph but gusting at 20mph+.

That being said, the tee-times for the 60-man field are bunched, with 3 ½ hours separating first-to-last. This means it’s unlikely we’ll see a serious bias develop.

With that, I’d pick reasonably freely from across tomorrow’s tee-times, with maybe a note of caution about not topping up on too many of the very earliest starters, just in case those morning conditions are especially difficult.

Thomas Detry 35/1 – 1/4 5 places – 1.25 pts ew

Start time: 11:33

For my first two picks I’m going with players who have some positive experience of this week’s host course in the Open de France, starting with Belgium’s Thomas Detry. He’s been consistently performing well for around four months now and with most of his best work coming in the opening round, he can start fast tomorrow.

Detry comes into this week after missing just one of his previous 11 cuts. Over that period, he finished 2nd in the Houston Open and performed excellently in each of his two major appearances in 2024, finishing 4th in the PGA Championship and 14th in the US Open.

The putter has been the key, ranking 8th for the season, but he did produce his best ball-striking performance of the season when we last saw him finishing 26th in Scotland three weeks ago, ranking 13th. Something I’m hoping he can at least carry into tomorrow’s opening round.

He ranks 17th in round one scoring on the PGA Tour this season and has been especially good over the last three months, ranking 8th in this field in strokes-gained total. Indeed, he shot a 64 in the opening round of the Scottish Open last time out, to sit 3rd after round one.

Detry has played here five times in the Open de France and recorded three top-25s, which includes a best of 8th in 2019, whilst he also went well on his Olympics debut in 2021, finishing 22nd. He can draw on that positive experience of the course to get off to another strong start on Thursday.

Guido Migliozzi 45/1 – 1/4 5 places – 1 pt ew

Start time: 10:22

Guido Migliozzi tied the course record at Le Golf National on the way to his victory here in 2022 and with his ball-striking looking as good as it has in years, he looks a strong candidate to go well in round one.

Migliozzi has been showing positive signs all season but he really came alive in May/June. A 2nd-place finish in the China Open kicked off a sequence of five top-25s in a row, which included him gaining a fourth DP World Tour win in the KLM Open five starts ago. Whilst when we last saw him he was a solid 31st in The Open.

He hit the ball well there at Royal Troon, ranking 16th in ball-striking and this has been a theme of his recent performances, as he enters this week ranking 9th off-the-tee and 10th in approach in this field over the last three months.

Migliozzi finished a mid-pack 32nd on his Olympic debut in 2021. He’ll fancy his chances of improving on that significantly at a course at which he’s recorded victory, and with his closing 62 in that triumph (along with a third-round 66) showing he has the ability to go low at Le Golf National, he’s an appealing candidate for the first-round lead this week.

Keita Nakajima 66/1 – 1/4 5 places – 0.75 pts ew

Start time: 11:17

Keita Nakajima has struggled on the Scottish links on his last two starts, missing the cut in both the Scottish Open and Open Championship. However, he had been performing well prior to that on the DP World Tour, often starting well, and with links golf not the easiest to grasp for beginners, I’m happy to forgive those two missed cuts and take him to start strongly tomorrow.

The former #1 amateur has made a great start to his rookie season on the DPWT, recording several top-10/20 finishes, which includes a breakthrough win in the Indian Open, where he dominated the field by four strokes.

This strong all-rounder had several positive starts prior to that two-week stint in Scotland. A 69 saw him sit 12th after round one in the BMW International Open three starts ago; a 4-under 66 was enough to sit 6th after the first round in the ISPS Handa Championship; and when recording that victory in the Indian Open, he opened with a 7-under 65 to tie the first-round lead.

Nakajima does have some valuable experience of this course, finishing 53rd in the individual competition at the 2022 World Amateur Team Championship. With a 6th in the European Open showing how well he can do on similarly difficult, exposed courses, I’m hopeful he can start his Olympic debut with haste tomorrow.
