Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who are the two betting favorites, headline the field for the 2023 U.S. Open. The year’s fourth and final grand slam event began on August 28 and will end on September 10. The outdoor event is being staged on the hardcourts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens. The site has been the host of the event since 1978.
Djokovic, who plays out of Belgrade, Serbia, is looking for his 24th grand slam title. The 36-year-old enters the 2023 U.S. Open as one of the best hardcourt players ever. Alcaraz is the defending U.S. Open champion, having downed Casper Rudd in 2022. The 20-year-old player from Spain is coming off a win over Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon Championship. Alcaraz is the No. 1 ranked player in the game, while Djokovic checks in at No. 2. There is a significant falloff in the points rankings after the top two, but Daniil Medvedev, who is near the top of the U.S. Open betting odds, is ranked at No. 3 in the world.

Novak Djokovic
The fact that three-time U.S. Open winner Novak Djokovic hasn’t won this event since 2018 and “only” has one final appearance since then hasn’t dissuaded bookmakers from installing him as the betting favorite to win this event in 2023. Winning two of three Grand Slam events and finishing as the runner-up in the third probably has much to do with why Djokovic is the favorite in New York. He has won this year at the Australian Open, and French Open, and was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.
Djokovic last played in this event in 2021, losing in the final to Daniil Medvedev in a matchup where Djokovic was a -275 betting favorite to the +230 underdog, Medvedev. COVID-19 vaccination travel restrictions prevented him from competing last year.
Djokovic enters the U.S, Open coming off a win at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio in mid-August.
Carlos Alcaraz
The man who prevented Novak Djokovic from going four-for-four in Grand Slam events in 2023 with his win at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz, enters the 2023 U.S. Open as the No. 1 ranked player in the game. Despite those facts and being the defending champion at the Open, Alcaraz is not the betting favorite to win the 2023 U.S. Open. He’s close to Djokovic at the top of the betting odds list, but he’s not his equal.
On paper, Alcaraz has the tougher draw of the top two players in this event, and there are some concerns about his focus in tournaments after his win at Wimbledon. While it’s true that those tournaments did not have the focus on them nor the prestige of the U.S. Open, that’s still something to be concerned about when considering the young player, who might be the future of tennis, as a betting pick for the U.S. Open.
Tommy Paul
If one wants a value bet for the 2023 U.S. Open, it’s hard not to look at Tommy Paul. Paul is the No. 14 ranked player in the men’s game, and he has made it to the third round of this event, where he matches up against the No. 21 ranked Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 26-year-old American made it to the final four of the Australian Open, and he has a win over Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters.
Considering it’s been 20 years since an American won the U.S. Open, expect Paul to have the crowd behind him at this event. Could that give him the boost he needs to pull off an upset win? It’s hard to say, but it’s worth placing a small wager on the American at the betting odds he’s getting.
Best Bets for the 2023 U.S. Open
While the betting odds could be better for those looking for value, it’s hard to pick against the top two ranked players in the world meeting in the final of the 2023 U.S. Open. Those players are, of course, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. As for the betting pick, look for Djokovic to get his first win at this event since 2018.
