Nottingham Tips: Varian duo of interest on Tuesday

Nottingham Tips: Varian duo of interest on Tuesday

  • By Admin

It’s a classy card – featuring four handicaps that make up Grassroots Series Finals Day – at Nottingham on Tuesday.

I’m hoping it proves a successful afternoon for trainer Roger Varian, whose two runners at Colwick Park have caught my eye.

14:40 – Times Edition @ 5/4

For me, this fillies’ maiden over 1m½ is between Where I Wanna Be, Zainabb and Times Edition for Ralph Beckett, Charlie Fellowes and Roger Varian respectively.

I respect the former two, but the latter is the suggestion based on her promising debut in a red-hot race at Salisbury earlier this month.

The Kingman filly, whose entry for next year’s Irish 1000 Guineas is a major indicator as to her quality, was an eye-catching third that day, behind two high class horses in Skellet and Serene Seraph, who emphatically franked the form at Newbury last Friday.

The soft ground is an unknown, as it is for almost all of the selection’s seven rivals, but I’m expecting her to improve substantially which should, at the very least, result in a bold bit.

16:25 – Warren Hill @ 4/1

Just under two hours later is the Grassroots Series Middle Distance Final Handicap – a Class 2 affair over 1m2f – and it’s another for Roger Varian, namely Warren Hill, that takes my fancy.

By No Nay Never and a half-sister to Charlie Appleby’s 110-rated Global Storm, the three-year-old is bred to be better than her current rating of 75, and recent performances are starting to support that theory.

She broke her duck at the seventh attempt when winning over course and distance in August off a mark of 70, and just missed out on following up at Bath the last day off 5lb higher. The selection travelled all over her seven rivals but didn’t appear to properly see out the 1m3½f trip.

This drop back in distance looks sure to suit, and I’m extremely hopeful the filly can continue to progress through the handicap ranks.

Just like my last tip, the ground is an unknown, but as they say: you don’t know until you try.
