Former Newcastle United striker Andy Cole believes that the rumoured transfer of England and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi would be a good one for the North East club…

Newcastle 24/25 Trophy Odds

  • Newcastle to win the Premier League @ 25/1
  • Newcastle to finish Top 4 @ 2/1
  • Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup @ 12/1
  • Newcastle to win the FA Cup @ 12/1

Speaking to Betfred earlier in the week, the England striker was asked about the proposed move and was pretty certain that it would be a good move for Eddie Howe and his men.

‘”I believe he’s more than capable of playing for any of the top teams in the Premier League. I’m not just talking about what people saw of him at the Euros because when I’ve watched him for Crystal Palace, and when he was on loan at Swansea City from Chelsea, you could see that he had something and he’s proved that now.

“If Newcastle got him, then that would be a fantastic coup. Newcastle have found themselves in this crazy situation where they’ve hardly spent any money but they’re still a bit dictated by FFP, but if they got Marc, then that would be great.”

The Toon Army had a frustrating campaign a year ago as an injury crisis, coupled with the season-long suspension of star summer-signing Sandro Tonali, saw them fall short in their quest to consolidate on their spectacular run to the Champions League.

Even so, a highly-questionable handball decision in Paris was the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of progressing from a very tough Champions League group. It was a Kieran Trippier mistake that saw them fall short in the Carabao Cup and they would have made Europe had it not been for Manchester City falling flat in the FA Cup Final as overwhelming favourites against their city-rivals.

With no European competition to play in this term, it should give Eddie Howe more time with his men on the training field and adding a player of Marc Guehi’s quality, should help rectify what was a porous backline at times last season.

Andy Cole went on to say “I’m not saying that [Fabian] Schär isn’t a good centre-back, because he is, but if Newcastle are looking to tidy up and become a stronger team, then Marc and [Sven] Botman at the back wouldn’t be a bad partnership.

“However, like I said, I think he could play for anyone because he’s proven that he’s that good. Even before he went to the Euros, people believed in him and were talking about Gareth Southgate taking him to the competition.

“He would never let anybody down, but now I think everybody knows that this kid can perform at the highest level. He’s always had it in him, so if Newcastle got him, that would be a good coup.”

Newcastle are currently trading at 25/1 to win the Premier League with Betfred and that may feel like a bit of a longshot but the 2/1 on them finishing in the Top Four may well interest and a signing of this level will only enhance their credentials. We also have them at 12/1 in both domestic cup competitions.
