Newcastle United are almost three years into their ownership under the Saudi Public Investment Fund and RB Sports & Media, and so far the fans have not been seeing the success they were hoping for. They qualified for the Champions League two years ago, capitalising on the shortcomings on some of the Premier League big-hitters, but last year they had to settle for seventh.

The recruitment drive has been mixed too, with fans frustrated that not all of their additions have been of a calibre to make them regular top-four contenders – that’s the Profitability & Sustainability regulations for you. The Magpies will still look to compete at the top end this term and I take a look at the Newcastle Premier League odds, giving my opinion on where they will finish.

Eddie Howe has done a sterling job on Tyneside since his arrival in 2021 and there is firm belief that he is the man to deliver success for the Toon Army, he just needs the resources to do it. Newcastle are currently hampered by P&S so that they cannot just throw their weight around and build a super team that could rival Manchester City as football’s powerhouse.

Howe knows the score, but I’m sure he will be hoping for some more recruits in the final weeks of the window if Newcastle are to keep on an upward trajectory and challenge for Europe. Lewis Hall is an excellent signing, having grown into the left-back role over the course of last year’s loan spell, and has likely made it his own for the upcoming campaign.

Two goalkeepers wouldn’t have been on supporters’ wish list but they have found two good options in Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy. Lloyd Kelly is a smart pick up on a free from Bournemouth, with Howe having briefly worked with the defender on the south coast. He is a big addition in an area that needed depth with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman out injured.

Football Odds

As things stand, the Magpies will be incredibly reliant on their current stars, while they await a marquee signing of this window. Alexander Isak is of course their main man, with the Swedish international netting over 20 goals last year, and he will be hoping for more joy in 2024/25.

He will be reliant on service from the likes of Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, who are another duo of great importance to the way this team plays. Gordon notched 11 goals and 10 assists in the league last season, while Guimaraes posted seven goals and eight assists himself.

This trio will be crucial for the Magpies’ aims of making their way back into the top six, but it might be difficult given that there are others outside the usual big dogs who have been strengthening well over the summer, particularly West Ham United, who are no strangers to the top six in recent years.

One thing that will work in Newcastle’s favour is their scheduling. No European football might just give them the edge in the league over the likes of Aston Villa, who are going to be toiling away in the Champions League.

If Newcastle can themselves avoid any big injuries this year, that will also aid their quest to return to the top six. However, I do remain skeptical as they haven’t made a signing yet that has made the team better in my opinion. So unless that changes, I think they may just miss out on the top six again this year.
