Horse racing tipster Owen McMahon shares a couple of tips from Newbury on Thursday.
Newbury Tips
The 0-90 handicap over 7f at 4.00 looks fiercely competitive, but when studying the race in a bit more detail I found negatives about a fair few of the likely contenders.
The one who stood out to me was HICKORY for James Fanshawe.
The five-year-old won his sole race as a juvenile and was subsequently gelded and kept off the track for 792 days. He’s had his issues, clearly, but evidently possesses a fair bit of talent for connections to persist for this long.
Last season, as a four-year-old, he won a novice contest and handicap at Kempton and put in a respectable enough effort at Southwell a few months later.
His reappearance this term was arguably underwhelming, given he was 4/5f, but that looked a fair contest and he’s entitled to have needed it. Providing he comes on for that today, and has no issues with the return to turf, I think he’s a solid bet at current prices.
The final race at Newbury on Thursday is a 0-75 handicap over 1m4f – and I’m keen on Sir Mark Prescott’s BLINDEDBYTHELIGHTS.
For those who are unaware of Sir Mark, he has a bit of a reputation for running juveniles over short trips, getting a lowly mark from the handicapper and then climbing the ranks as a three-year-old racing over significantly further.
That’s the case for the selection, who easily won at Yarmouth off a mark of 62 just over a week ago. He couldn’t back that up at Lingfield’s all-weather track four days later off 6lbs higher, but there were excuses in-running and I think he’ll enjoy this return to turf.
This isn’t a strong race at all, and if the son of Protectionist is none the worse for his efforts just three days ago I expect him to continue progressing through the ranks.
