  • See the NBA preseason odds and predictions for today’s two-game slate

The 2023 NBA preseason continues on Wednesday. Only a pair of games are on the docket but both feature matchups between teams that made the postseason last year.  Today’s action starts with the Boston Celtics vs Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly at 4:00 pm PT/7:00 pm ET and finishes with the Sacramento Kings vs Los Angeles Lakers at the Honda Center in Anaheim at 7:00 pm PT/10:00 pm ET.

As preseason NBA odds tend to be, the point spreads for both games are narrow.

NBA Preseason Odds on Wednesday, October 11

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Boston Celtics -2.5 (-118) -154 O 219.5 (-110)
Philadelphia 76ers +2.5 (-104) +126 U 219 (-110)
Team Spread Moneyline Total
Sacramento Kings -1.5 (-106) -115 O 225.5 (-113)
Los Angeles Lakers +1.5 (-114) -105 O 225.5 (-113)

Boston is listed as a 2.5-point road favorite over Philadelphia, while the Kings are 1.5-point road favorites over a Lakers team that will, once again, be without LeBron James (rest).

Boston is listed as the third-favorite in the NBA championship odds, narrowly trailing the reigning-champion Denver Nuggets and the Milwaukee Bucks, who made a massive splash by trading for Damian Lillard in the offseason.

The Lakers (+750) are listed as the fourth-favorite in the NBA Conference odds, behind Denver, Phoenix, and Golden State. Despite finishing third in the West last season, the Kings are much further down the list, sitting tied for eighth at +2900.

Celtics vs 76ers Odds & Picks

The Philadelphia 76ers have already done something they didn’t do in the entire 2022 preseason: lose a game. After running the table last year, the Sixers opened their 2023 slate with a 114-106 loss to this same Celtics team on Sunday in Boston.

Neither Joel Embiid, James Harden, nor De’Anthony Melton played in the opener, and it’s unclear which of that trio will see time tonight. Embiid, a top-four favorite in the early NBA MVP odds, is listed as questionable. Harden, whose future with the team is entirely up in the air, is “day-to-day” for “personal” reasons.

But with their second preseason game at home, it’s likely head coach Nick Nurse gives his starters and regular-season rotation players more time than they saw on Sunday.

Expect the opposite to be true for Boston. The Celtics’ starting five – Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Derrick White – all played at least 21 minutes on Sunday, as did likely sixth-man Jrue Holiday. None played the next night in a 114-107 road loss to the Knicks, and though they are likely to be dressed tonight, don’t expect the same type of minutes they played in Boston’s preseason opener.

BOS vs PHI Pick: 76ers moneyline (+126)

Kings vs Lakers Odds & Prediction

The Sacramento Kings are coming off an 112-99 loss to Toronto at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. It’s clear that there is steep drop off after their starting five, none of whom played more than 16 minutes on Sunday. The team was led in scoring by 28-year-old rookie Sasha Vezenkov, who had just 12 points.

The Kings have had three days of rest since their first preseason game and don’t play again until Sunday. If Mike Brown doesn’t give his big guns a little more run, it will be a small surprise.

The Lakers  were routed by the Warriors (125-108) on Saturday – losing every single quarter – but bounced back with a 129-126 win over Brooklyn on Monday with LeBron scoring 10 points and adding five assists in 17 minutes in his preseason debut.

Anthony Davis played just 13 minutes in the first game and 14 in the second, averaging just over a point per minute. Given that he hasn’t played more than 62 games since 2017, he’s unlikely to see more than that in any single preseason game.

While the Lakers have taken some steps to address a lack of depth that’s hounded them the past couple years, that is still going to be a pain-point for the franchise in 2023, much like the Kings.

FanDuel is currently offering first quarter+full-time props, which is somewhat rare for preseason action. I do expect the Kings to start strong with their starting five playing considerably more minutes than they did on Sunday. There’s better value on Sacramento to win both the first quarter and the game at +160 than just betting Sacramento to win at -140.

SAC vs LAL Pick: Kings first-quarter moneyline + full-time moneyline parlay (+160)
