NBA commissioner Adam Silver opens up about league expansion

NBA commissioner Adam Silver opens up about league expansion

  • By Admin

Over the last several years, lingering discussions have centered around the NBA’s possibly expanding teams.

League commissioner Adam Silver voiced earlier this week that this topic wasn’t talked about during the meeting with the board of governors, but he anticipates it being something addressed during the upcoming season.

“There was not a lot of discussion in this meeting about expansion, but only largely not for lack of interest, it was that we had said to them that we’re not quite ready,” Silver said via ESPN.

“It was something that we told our board we plan to address this season, and we’re not quite ready yet. But I think there’s certainly interest in the process, and I think that we’re not there yet in terms of having made any specific decisions about markets or even frankly to expand.”

When the NBA does venture down that route of discussion, it will likely center on the league adding a pair of teams that play in Seattle and Las Vegas. Those two locations have commonly been central talking points as the location for any new teams that are formed.

Since the Oklahoma City Thunder, previously the SuperSonics, left Seattle, there has been a constant push to get another team to return.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas has become a talking point in an increasing manner, especially with the league now holding its new annual in-season tournament semifinals and championship games there. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has also repeatedly discussed the scenario of owning a team that plays in Las Vegas.
