Nap of the Day: We’re just wild about Harry

I’m heading to Wolverhampton’s all-weather Tapeta surface for our Nap – deep ground at the scheduled NH meetings (Huntingdon and Cork) adds a degree of uncertainty, and with the likes of Rossa and Billy the Kid at Dunstall Park why would you want to look elsewhere?

15.50 Wolverhampton – Goldsmith @ 5/1

Could be looking for trouble here. Having extolled the virtues of Messrs Rossa Ryan and Billy Loughnane earlier I’m opposing both, who are likely to dominate the market, with another horse altogether!

Goldsmith is a 4-yr-old gelding trained by Alice Haynes, and will be ridden by the excellent Harry Davies. He’s a vastly-experienced campaigner owned by the shrewd winner-factory that is the Horse Watchers.

Last time at Lingfield over 10f he perhaps just faltered after coming to win his race, and the step back 1.5f might just suit beautifully. He’s up one pound from Lingers but he’s been in ultra-consistent form and a repeat will surely see him go ever so close.

Nearly won a Class 5 handicap at Epsom in the summer off today’s mark at this trip, and finished strongly. Harry Davies is a finesse jockey – horses travel for him, and he can produce them to a nicety at the business end.

I’m extremely hopeful that from the two box Harry can smuggle Goldsmith into the contest, and strike late. Could be a big day for the teenager – from just two booked rides he’s got this and the likely favourite in the 15.20, Get Set Jet.

Hazza at the double perhaps? Why on earth not!
